Heather and I chatted and she did speak to the 3 learners who have come in the past-One said she can start coming back soon, the other said next week and J will be back in 2 weeks and says she plans to come weekly. J is the one who has been unable to come due to childcare but came almost every week since we started the classes in 2015. So I think we’ll keep the class going just for her :)

We had a new learner join today! She just started working at Purdy a few weeks ago and seems very motivated and excited to be there. I think she really enjoyed the class today and all learners were very welcoming and supportive. I would be surprised if she didn’t come back! We started with review of last week by working a bit wit the images that represent each generation. We then practiced a few short dialogues about the year we were born, the generation of our children, etc.. We did a listen/find and practiced pronunciation with an article which helped to characterize each generation. I then created an activity that allowed them all the chance to speak for a few minutes by presenting a character from the deck of professions. They each got a card with some basic info about the person and the others had to guess which generation they belonged to. Although it was a bit rushed at the end due to time, It was pretty successful and fun!Lesson Title:

I did see Heather briefly but she didn’t mention whether or not she talked to them and was in a hurry so I didn’t get the chance to ask. I plan to email about it tomorrow, it might make sense to take a few weeks off until J comes back mid-June. It’ll be up to them…

As promised, I came prepared with a lesson about the different generations (baby boomers, x, y/milennials, etc). We started with looking at images that represent each generation and writing down the names and years of each one. We then looked at a great graph that summarized them all according to year, age, major life events and common characteristics of the people in the different generations- it was pretty accurate! We then practiced conversation with questions like ‘which generation are you’ and which generation are your kids?’. We ended with a writing activity where i dictated some common themes for 3 of the generations (Z,Y and X) We will pick up here next week and wrap up the social media theme.Date of Class: 5/9/18

Although I wasn’t feeling super confident about todays class, it ended up being pretty awesome! I was hoping they would be excited about downloading the language learning app, Duolingo since it is now available in Laos, but, either they weren’t that into it, or they were confused. I did find out that their children (who are my age) are the ones who help them with their phones, and one learner commented that they won’t remember their passwords. In short, I just don’t think they are as smartphone saavy as I thought. I told them they should write it down and ask their kids to look into it as I think it could be fun for them to try out. We’ll see!
I transitioned into the controversial topic of ‘ young children and their overuse of smartphones’ which turned out to be very interesting and relevant to them. As we went along with a listening/fill in the blank activity, we stopped a lot to talk about certain vocabulary, or one would make a personal comment regarding their grandchildren. The term i-generation came up and that led to a mini lesson about the names of the different generations (baby boomers, x, y/milennials, etc) They didn’t realize that they were all (mostly) baby boomers! Since they were so interested to learn more, I told them I would prepare a lesson on this topic for next class, or at least a part of it. They are so into it! So much that one learner who is going to be on vacation the next 2 weeks said (twice) that she really didn’t want to miss any classes. She said she’d almost rather skip her trip to California! I was so honored and these are the kind of classes that continue to remind me how awesome this work is! I feel lucky to be a part of their world; I learn just as much from them as they do from me, if not more ;)Lesson Title:

L usually doesn’t miss that many in a row. P only does come here and there so I’m not surprised about her. I talked to Heather briefly about it and she said she would check in with them to see what’s going on. We also talked about J, the learner that would come every single week but hasn’t been able to the past few months as she needs to help out with her grandson who has a disability. Apparently, when school is out, she plans to start coming again so I think we are all willing to keep the session going just for her. And of course, the 2nd group is proof that the classes are definitely desired by the majority (see below for a specific comment from a learner that made my heart melt ;)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Three learners came to class, all a little late(closer to 6:30) but we began right away with the usual alphabet and yell n spell. Since the weather has been so nice and I didn’t have time to plan a new class about volunteering, I went with a summer activity themed class which ended up being a hit! We explored a word cloud related to the outdoors and summer activities. Using images of things we do outside/in warm weather, learners learned new vocabulary and asked each other questions like ‘Have you ever been horseback riding/swimming/hikining, etc.. Lots of engagement and laughter :)

We had another fun class talking about social media/networking. We reviewed some things we learned last week and practiced talking about our facebook accounts. Learners explored some vocabulary via a word cloud. Most of the class focused on speaking/conversation and ended with some writing where we talked about smartphones being addictive. Almost all learners admitted that they have a slight addiction to their phones, as did I ;) We will delve deeper into this topic next week!Lesson Title:

All 6 learners came again today and it was a super fun class! We were all happy to be back after a 2 week break. We started with a title to open up the new theme (can’t believe we hadn’t yet explored this topic until now!). I was so curious to find out how much they know about(and use) social media. When I said the term and asked if they heard it before, none of them did (or they just didn’t remember). I wanted to have them brainstorm about social media but since they didn’t know the term, I started with a listen/find with an icon document that has all the most common icons on it along with the names of each one (fb, insta, twitter, youtube, etc..). Of course this helped a lot and they were familiar with more of them than I think they expected! During this activity, we practiced talking about our phones and asked the questions ‘what kind of phone do you have? ‘which carrier do you use?’ and which apps do you use most? I figured this would help me truly understand their social media usage. We then did a listen activity with a recording and cloze activity to go along with it and learned some new vocab through this activity. Lastly we practiced more dialogue using the focus question “Are you on FB?” I found that almost all of them have fb but don’t really use it. We then worked with that and practiced some focused grammar ; does she use fb/is she on fb back and forth was awesome practice since they have a hard time with the verbs ‘Be’ and ‘Do’. Fun class and I think we’ll all enjoy the next few weeks exploring this theme!Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 2 learners; 1 came at 6:30 and the other at 7:10- When the 1st learner arrived we did a brief alphabet activity and names, and then practiced asking eachother questions about social media use. She only uses snapchat and since neither I nor Sofia use that platform, we asked her to tell us about it. This was the perfect opportunity to a variation of the Language Experience Approach (LEA) activity as she was able to explain it in a way we could understand but needed some help with grammar. So I had her say a sentence, then I corrected it as she wrote it down. She loved it! We did a few sentences and then the 2nd learner came in. He had been to classes before but hadn’t been in a while. His daughter- who attends Rigler-was with him and after him and Sofia chatting briefly, we got onto the topic of Rigler becoming a Spanish only school starting next year- he indicated that he didn’t know this information but the other learner, and Sofia verified that it is in fact the case. It was an interesting and important conversation and the remainder of the class was spent discussing the issue.
