What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 3 learners today but because it was a smaller group, we got some great focused practice in. We started with the title of todays lesson and since these learners had also never heard the expression, and also seemed to like it, I had them come up with sentences of their own. They did pretty good! And I did a short version of LEA during this activity as well. I think I need to incorporate this activity more often :)
Next we learned about the different kinds of honeybees (Queens, drones, and workers), talked about what bees do in general, and what they do for us.They were very surprised to hear how important bees are to our food chain and we all found it interesting that the only job of the drone bee is to mate with the queen- once that happens, the bee dies off! I also found out that in Laos, they eat the “baby bees” as one learner said. I didn’t understand at first but then after some googling, I found out that basically beekeepers don’t exist; instead, ‘hunters’ brave the climb (and stings) to go snag beehives for the honey. Since they get the whole hive, there are usually larvae (baby bees ;) inside the combs which are somewhat of a delicacy because of the danger of the job…there was a bit more discussion about this and it was so interesting! With just 10 minutes left we were able to squeeze in the cloze activity about vanishing bees. This group also seemed super interested in the topic so I look forward to returning to it next week :)Lesson Title:Busy as a Bee

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I started to plan a class about local flora but then got inspired to focus solely on Bees, mostly because certain bees are vanishing at an astonishing rate and it’s an important topic. Just J came today and she had a lot to say about bees. We started with the title of todays lesson and she said she had never heard the expression. So we explored that a bit and then I asked the question “have you ever been stung by a bee”? J told me all about a time she got stung by a bunch of wasps when she was a little girl. It was quite an interesting story so I turned that into an LEA activity which was just totally rad. That took up most of the class but we did get to squeeze in a cloze activity about vanishing bees. We talked a bit about why they are so important to us, and plants we can keep around to help save them. Great class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fun class before a 2 week break! We practiced a dialogue about the heatwave we’ve been having.. I had learners dictate the first 3 lines and then after practicing those, everyone had to come up with their own answer to the question on the 3rd line (person B) which was “What have you been doing to stay cool?” I gave them a model answer of “I’ve been taking lots of cold showers” and then helped them each write their sentences correctly. We then put the whole dialogue together in a round robin activity. We ended with a version of 20 questions. I laid out several objects/images of vocabulary from our last two ‘units’ on Famous Places and Vacation/travel. First we reviewed names of things and places and then I modeled the activity. It took a few tries for everyone to get it but once we got it going, it was super fun! And great grammar practice particularly with using ‘to be’ in the question form. Everyone got the chance to pick the object/place and we ended right on time :)

Since it’s the last day of the spring term and we have a break for 2 weeks, I prepared some fun game like activities mostly related to vocabulary, to review what we’ve learned the past few months. I also prepped a little mini lesson about the American Dream’ since right now there’s so much going on surrounding this idea of America being a safe place for immigrants and refugees- as we all know, it is currently quite the opposite. Regardless, in this class, it was just 1 learner and as we were getting started, she mentioned that she needs to practice more English at home, specifically reading and writing. I asked her if she has internet and a computer and since she does, I told her about using sites like youtube to practice with. She seemed super interested and intrigued and since she uses youtube, I told her I’d give her a little tutorial on how to use it for practicing English. In doing this we came across 2 channels (one of them I’ve seen before) that she thinks will be very helpful. We practiced some writing with this one:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): For this class we also began with review of the questions from last week about the most recent trip we took and then asked a few new questions related to the topic. Most learners in this group have been camping at least once. We reviewed the vocab from last week, and then played a version of the game “I’m going on a camping trip and I’ll need to bring my…” We had a lot of items to go through but everyone did great and a lot of laughter was shared :)

It was discovered that one of the learners has never been camping. We started with writing, asking/answering some questions about the most recent trip we took. Questions asked were ‘What was the last trip you took?’ How did you get there, and How long did it take to drive/fly? Next we filled out the chart with more info about our recent trips and shared with the group. We spent the last 15 minutes of the class learning the vocab of the items I brought in and then we categorized them according to the type of vacation (camping, sightseeing, beach. :)

Again, as I forgot to update last week, this is a brief summary of the details of the class. It was the last day for this topic and since we didn’t learn much about half of the landmarks, I wanted to give them at least brief descriptions about each famous place. First we reviewed each image and it’s corresponding location and we did sort of a memory type game with this. Then, instead of dictating these descriptions to them, I wrote them on note cards and had them work in pairs to dictate to each other (somewhat of an information gap type activity). They all seemed to enjoy having the opportunity to read their descriptions aloud :)Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Two learners came today, both almost on time! We started with writing, asking/answering some questions about the most recent trip we took. Questions asked were ‘What was the last trip you took?’ How did you get there, and How long did it take to drive/fly? This took a good 20 minutes as we stopped in between to have some side conversation. Also out of this, learner were introduced to words specifically related to traveling by plane like flight and layover. They both practiced this new vocabulary in sentences. Next we filled out a chart with more info about our recent trips but since we only had 10 minutes left, and I wanted to show them all the items I brought in, we spent the last bit of time looking at things you might bring on a trip. There is a whole activity to this that we will work on next time. The items they got to learn the names of (or review) are as follows: sleeping bag, binoculars, snorkels, goggles, camera, guide book, backpack, fanny pack, shades, sun hat, etc… Next week we will categorize them according to the type of vacation (camping, sightseeing, beach. :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I just realized I forgot to update from last weeks class so this is just a brief post about that. Two learners came, though one was quite late. We first worked with the world map, pointing out countries that would be discussed when talking about famous places/landmarks. We then just looked at the images and wrote down the name of each landmark. We did a round robin asking the question “where is __________?” It’s in _________. We didn’t get through all images using this question but they at least got to learn the names of them before moving onto the next topic :)

We started with a review of the names of the 7 landmarks/places via the images, and talked about which place we would like to go if we ever had the chance. We then matched the landmark to the country. Next, we did a short dictation about Ankor Wat and then listened to a podcast as we followed along with the transcript. Next was a little vocabulary activity related to the podcast. We had a little time left to talk about the Bermuda Triangle so we did a short listening/cloze activity about that. She says she will be back every week since now school is out and she doesn’t need to take care of her grandson anymore. We caught up a bit and then P- who is the lowest level learner of this group- arrived shortly after. Since P wants/needs basic conversation practice, and J felt a little rusty, we just practiced ‘getting to know you’ type questions the whole class. We wrote most of the questions/answers down and practiced in a round robin style… I learned some very interesting things about J’s past related to her upbringing in Laos as a Hmong speaker and also about the marriage laws (or lack there-of) in her country. Very interesting! It was great to have them both there!

We had another fun class and the newest learner came back! We started with a quick review of the world map, and I tried to point out countries that we didn’t locate last week. Next we reviewed the names of the 7 landmarks/places via the images, and practiced more with the short dialogue which was a spin off of the ‘This is an apple’ activity. We were going to listen to a short podcast and follow along with a transcript about Ankor Wat but we were having connection issues- while I was trying to figure that out, the new learner, “M”, talked about how she’s sad for her country (Guatemala) because of the huge Volcano that erupted 2 days ago. She showed a video and the Laos speakers were talking amongst eachother- I assume one was translating for the others. It was so sad to see the images and we all agreed that its a very unfortunate natural disaster for anyone to have to experience.so instead, we all took turns reading from the transcript. Since I couldn’t connect to the internet, we instead just took turns reading from the transcript which ended up being good in the end as they all appreciate the opportunity to practice pronunciation.Lesson Title:

P- who is the lowest level learner of this group- arrived at about 12:55 so although she was late, it was great to have someone here! She said she needs help with conversation so I scratched the plan I had and we just practiced ‘getting to know’ you type questions. I told her we would pretend we were just meeting for the first time and we started from there- ‘what’s your name, where are you from, how long have you been here, how many children, what do you do/where do you work, etc…’ We wrote most of the questions/answers down and each asked eachother the same question. This was really good and necessary practice for this learner. We ended with asking each other q’s about family and she learned the word sibling! We were going to draw family trees but didn’t have time so will plan to do this next week if she comes back :)

We had a super fun class with a ton of laughter. This topic is fun and interesting and the images I printed out to use the next few weeks are so lovely. We will focus on famous places/landmarks/wonders of the world such as; Ankor Wat, leaning tower, Niagara Falls, Bermuda Triangle, to name a few. Today was the introduction to that so we started by first looking at a map of the world and finding various countries. We practiced a lot with using the qualifier ‘The’ when talking about ‘the ocean’. Next we learned the names of the 7 landmarks/places via the images, wrote them down along with their locations. We ended with a short dialogue which was a spin off of the ‘This is an apple’ activity. EX) This is Angkor wat. Where is that? It’s in Cambodia, ohhh, it’s in Cambodia! It was so fun (and funny) for them and we got tons of pronunciation practice in during this activity. The newer learner popped in briefly at the start of class to say that she couldn’t come today but will be back next week.mostly
