Since it was the last class for the 2 learners who are retiring, and I had planned to give them both cards and chocolate as a farewell gift, I decided I would do a whole lesson on greeting cards. It was actually pretty fun! I brought in a few different cards and we practiced talking about occasions, who we give cards to, etc.. Come to find out, they don’t really give/send cards and the only time they do is New Years, and that’s pretty rare these days, they said. Regardless, they were intrigued by the cards I brought in and also because they were confused by the messages (language) in some of them, we focused on that for a bit. I wanted to have them all sign the 2 cards so we looked at some ‘common messages to write in a retirement card’ so they could get some ideas. We all signed the 2 cards and said our good byes. It was very bittersweet and I was asked again to attend the retirement party so I plan to be there for sure :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We mostly worked with ordinal numbers and addresses today. We talked about what part of town we live in and practiced a variety of addresses. I’m not sure how, but somehow the topic of siblings came up and then we were talking about how many siblings we have and that went into practice with comparisons (who’s older/oldest, younger/youngest). Everyone was so into it that we didn’t realize we almost went over time! That’s when you know it’s a good class :)

When class began, there was so much fruit on the table; plums, pears, prunes, apples and mangoes. Learners were offering each other their bounties and it gave me an idea to practice this/that/these/those. It was so good! We practiced ‘what are those/what is that, whose are those/whose is that and then one learner brought up ‘That belongs to me’ so we practiced that phrase a bunch too. Really great practice over all! And then we ate the fruit :) This took up a good chunk of class but we ended with yoga talk- first a listening activity with some highlighted vocab words related to yoga and then we talked more in depth about those vocabulary words. Next week will be the last class for 2 learners who are retiring :(

This was a very go with the flow type class.. The newer learner was the first to arrive, and right on time! I started reviewing some of the basic questions we practiced last week and then learner 2 came in and I included her into this activity, having them ask eachother ‘getting to know you’ type questions. The 3rd learner came in and we continued these types of questions with her. The newest learner was having difficulty to remember to use the s ending on the he/she/it form so we practiced this for a bit. We ended with practicing ordinal numbers and speaking our addresses aloud. I think I’ll focus on maps/addresses next week.

We started with talking about 9/11- first did a short title with the well-known phrase ‘Never forget’. We then practiced a question/answer round robin style; ‘what were you doing when you heard the news about the terrorist attacks’? Everyone remembered exactly what they were doing and they all learned the new expression ‘I couldn’t believe my eyes’. They loved that! We did a listening activity about the Heroes of 9/11 and then learned a few new vocab words like ‘debris, cloned and hijacked’. We didn’t have a ton of time left but switched over to yoga talk for the last 20 minutes. We reviewed our poses, practiced some and then learned new phrases that one would hear in a yoga class like ‘Interlace your fingers, stand with feet hip width apart, etc..’. We ended with a TPR using our new phrases. I learned that 2 learners are retiring in October! So the class will go down to 4 once they do. I was invited to their retirement party on a Friday. The learner who was there told me she wants me to come because she plans to thank me in her speech. Hello, tears! So sweet, I will definitely plan to go :)

I planned a class that would start with talking a bit about 9/11 then finish with the topic of the month, yoga. I didn’t think any learners were coming but then at 1:20 (class ends at 1:50), 2 showed up together. One was new! She is a Vietnamese speaker and just started working at Sherwin about a month ago. She is at a very beginner level- her comprehension of the language is decent, her writing is pretty good but her speaking/pronunciation and grammar are at a low-beginner level. So we really just spend the 30 minutes practicing some very basic getting to know you questions. I had a very hard time understanding her but think even in that short time she got a lot from the class and I have a feeling will be back next week.

We started with the title, and then practiced talking about where we have pain or discomfort in our bodies, what the cause might be, and what we do for relief. Similar to class #1, I brought to their attention that while of course it’s great to stretch our body, strengthening exercises are just as important.*I did not model my plank pose for this group ;)
We also reviewed parts of body and learned the new words very specific to yoga/fitness like pelvis, abdominal muscles, inner thighs, glutes, etc.. We learned the names -by looking at images- of some of the more common yoga poses. Using the images, we did a listening activity where I described the pose and they had to point to the image. They did good! I wanted to reverse that and have them do the describing but we wouldn’t have had time so we ended with a quick discussion about the connection of mind, body and soul. They all seem to have a good grasp on this concept, and we talked about things we do that fulfill these parts of our being :)

We started with the title, which I chose because a few learners have mentioned neck pain. I found it fitting to practice this expression within this topic of discussion. After this – via dictation/round robin, we practiced talking about where we have pain or discomfort in our bodies, what the cause might be, and what we do for relief. I brought to their attention that while of course it’s great to stretch our body, strengthening exercises are just as important. They wanted to know how to strengthen their arm muscles so we talked about lifting light weights (cans of food will work at home), doing push-ups on the knees, and plank pose (They loved that I could model all these things for them! ;)
Next we reviewed parts of body and learned some new words very specific to yoga/fitness like pelvis, abdominal muscles, inner thighs, glutes, etc.. Lastly, we learned the names -by looking at images- of some of the more common yoga poses. I modeled a few poses for them as well, and one learner took a picture of the images so she can practice at home this week.

We started with the title, then talked a bit about what the meaning of ‘soul’ is. It was a bit complex but I think we got it! We reviewed questions from last week (without looking at notes!) and then practiced some new questions about our personal relationship to yoga. We did the yoga pose document search and during this some of them were getting up on their own and modeling the poses! It was great! I also did a fun activity where I described the pose and they had to figure out which one it was. They did good! We went over body vocabulary and the short phrases heard in yoga mentioned above. We didn’t watch the video yet, but spent more time talking about the history of yoga before we ran out of time. More yoga fun next week!

Great class with a lot of speaking practice! Like I did in the first class, we started with a dialogue about the smokey hot weather and talked about our feeling regarding the dreadful month of August. That led into a short discussion about the hurricane that is about to (maybe) hit Hawaii and also the earthquake in Venezuela and the one that happened this morning off the coast of Southern Oregon. We talked about earthquake insurance and some of them didn’t know that it existed. They all said they are going to look into it, especially the ones who are homeowners. We then began to explore the theme of the day and to my surprise, all except one learner do in fact practice yoga in some way! I learned that only 1 learner goes to yoga classes and the rest do it at home with some sort of instructional video.. We mostly practiced asking basic eachother questions about the topic (do you do yoga, how often, do you go to classes, etc..)- lots of good grammar and speaking practice here. We had a little time to do a doc search with a bunch of different images of poses with their corresponding Sanskrit and English names. This topic is definitely a hit! I look forward to exploring it with them over the next few weeks :)

I have been wanting to do a module on yoga foreverrrr now and the time has come- I have been doing yoga on and off for the past 12 years and the inspiration to start a yoga themed class came to me yesterday after I finally took a class in almost 2 months(!!) Life just got in the way but I needed it so bad and since I felt like million bucks after the class I decided it’s time to spread the word to my learners about the joy of yoga. ( I didn’t assume that none of them practice yoga but I had a pretty good guess that this wasn’t the case). Anywho, I didn’t have a ton of time to plan so I printed off a few things and decided to just start with the very basics. The first learner was 15 minutes late today and the 2nd, closer to 30 mins. So, we didn’t get very far at all. In fact, since the weather (smoke from fires) has been hard to ignore, I decided to just start with a little dialogue about that. That led into some other discussions about what we’ve been doing to stay cool which led into a discussion about what our daily routines are, which led into a discussion about Autism. Crazy how it works like that! But I’m all about going with the flow (like yoga! ;) in class and so we rolled with it. We only had a few minutes to talk yoga- and I guessed right, neither of these 2 learners have ever taken a class. One said she wants to but is scared. They are very interested in learning more so we will delve right in next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Similar to group 1, class started with the title of todays lesson and she we practiced few sentences with the expression ‘It’s the Bees Knees’. This led to the short discussion about the origin of the expression which led to the topic of pollination. I had a diagram to show how bees pollinate flowers so we talked about that a bit. We looked at a word cloud about bees, talked about honey and its benefits, and also natural remedies for bee stings. We practiced dialogue about getting stung by bees and then talked about the difference between wasps and bees. We ended with the dictation that included 6 things we can do in our yards/gardens to help save the bees. Most learners didn’t know how important bees are, and admitted that they try to kill them when they are in their yard. So my hope is that after today, they will not only stop killing them, but implement practices to help save them! :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started with the title of todays lesson and she we practiced few sentences with the expression ‘It’s the Bees Knees’- this led us to the origin of the expression which led to the topic of pollination. I had a diagram to show how bees pollinate flowers so we talked about that a bit. The learner commented that she didn’t learn about this in her country and she was happy to know that bees play such an important role in our food chain. At first she thought it was only bees that pollinate so we cleared that up as well. We talked about honey and its benefits, and also natural remedies for bee stings. We ended with a dictation that included 6 things we can do in our yards/gardens to help save the bees. Great class :)
