    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a large class with a four new students. We went to the bigger room. We did spelling and dictation, and were able to look at invasive plants on posters. Ramin broke up some of the dictation with an activity pointing out the cardinal directions. The new students seemed engaged.

    We went through the abc sheet and Yell and Spell. Janet then led the group in dictation identifying items on two recipes she brought. We then did Round Robin passing around some cherry tomatoes that everyone had the option of trying. We ended with a bingo game on cards we filled in with a dictation activity with vegetable names.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After the alphabet sheets and Yell and Spell, Marc introduced Patrick from Portland Parks and Rec and Matthew from Urban Forestry, using their names and introductions in a dictation exercise. We then identified words on the Invasive Species handout. This was followed by copying a diagram of a leaf of a Tree of Heaven, an invasive species. We identified the parts of the leaf with choral response. We than did a round robin where we asked each other if we had ever seen the tree.

    What happened: This was Janet’s first silent class. She did not speak while teaching. We started with “Listen” and Point. Janet used flash cards to indicate the letters she wanted and was able to use them to do combinations of letters as well. We then did Yell & Spell, with Janet using sign language (and her DJ’s voice) to do her name. Luckily, after that they library allowed us to move to the bigger room since we had such a large class. We then went through a dictation progression, Janet again signing the dialogue and the DJ speaking it out loud. We worked on a memory game done with animal flashcards.

    What happened:
    This was Janet’s second silent class, and we were again able to use the bigger room. We did Listen and Point with the alphabet flashcards. The class was able to understand what Janet wanted and had fun. After Yell & Spell, we went through a dialogue with Ivy and Mike speaking the parts. The group then stood up and did a Listen and Do activity acting out food prep words like “wash hands” and “mop.” We then did dictation with some new sentences related to food safety. Janet brought a word search, and the class worked on that in pairs, and we did a choral response with those terms.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class began with Listen and Point with the alphabet sheet. We had a few students show up during this exercise, so it got a bit crowded. We then went ahead with the Yell & Spell. Everyone did well, and the new students caught on immediately. After doing the dictation progression with the lesson title, Service Animals, we moved onto to a dialogue about guide animals, followed by a round robin with the dialogue. We then worked with handouts Janet brought about ADA Service animals and unusual service animals. Janet then finished up with an active exercise, having everyone stand and point as she called out the cardinal directions.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The biggest class I ever been to, with more than 20 students , it was amazing having so much people interested in learning.
    Mark was an excelent teacher, I saw a bit of nervousness at the beginning of the class. Then we had to move to the bigger room because we didn’t have more room. The were two assistants making sure the studens were writing correctly and pronouncing correctly. At the end we asked them to stand up and point North, East, South and East.

We then did Sentence dictation with several food safety sentences, followed by a round robin where we passed around and identified a meat thermometer. We were missing quite a few of our higher level learners, so sentence dictation took a while, but everyone seemed to learn some things.
