Lesson Title: “When there is an emergency”
    Date of Class: 10.17.18
    Day of Class: Wednesday
    Time of Class: 6
    MC: Mellissa
    DJ: Lizzy
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner: Yolanda, Portland Crime Prevention Coordinator who shared department information, and Elizabeth
    Module: Voting
    How Many Learners: 13
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):

    Self Evaluation

Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 6
    Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 7
    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 8
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 9

    Total Score: 41

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Table at Midland Library practically at overflow capacity! Two new learners representing two new languages. Mellissa set a great tone with a well paced Alphabet that provided some significant challenges in a way that was not too overwhelming. The activities focused on vocabulary and dialogue related to emergencies and 911. Mellisa did an excellent job getting people to focus on each other by stopping in the middle of the lesson to go over everyone’s name again. There was ample time to practice dictation and dialouge “911 – what is your emergency?” “I need an interpreter!” Bingo relating to emergencies was brought to a new level by nice new water bottle prizes compliments of the city. One of the challenges discussed in the reflection was the difficulties of knowing how far to go when facillating corrections in learners.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

Vanessa started out with a well paced, fluid Alphabet Listen & Point, taking the time to carefully enunciate some of the more complicated sounds and highlighting subtle differences. The class was all about apples and there was good balance between written and verbal activities. Vanessa kept the group focused and motivated using a lot of positive feedback. It was a smaller class with the learners well connected and supportive of one and other. Extra special bonus: Vanessa brought in a large bag of Gala apples to share with everybody!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Prior to class, the roles of shadowers and assistants were discussed and a focus was emphasezed -encouraging learners to learn from each other. Gaston engaged the group from the very beginning by a well-crafted alphabet. Using dictated words from a Labor Day word cloud, Gaston had the learners create their own Bingo cards which they later played with M&Ms. This novel activity brought the energy level in the class way up and kept everyone thoroughly engaged.

    Total Score: 38

What happened: There was difficulty accessing the classroom, heat was rather oppressive, multiple learners were late, and class was interrupted by explanation of a MACG meeting taking place at the same time. Ultimately, a number of learners chose to attend this meeting halfway through. DESPITE ALL OF THIS, Santiago led a very dynamic class which engaged learners in creative techniques which got them working hard and challenging themselves. A favorite activity was utilizing various tools – naming them and exchanging them. A simple activity, which was met with much enthusiasm.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Having one learner was probably reflective of the school being in “lock down” all day because of a police incident. Nonetheless, Max was well prepared for the topic with a well designed lesson plan focusing on trees- including lots of colored prints and activities. The learner appeared to thrive on the extra attention and exhibited considerable progress since starting the program. Arbor Day on 4/21/18 was highlighted.

social media terms, including a giant smiling love emoji pillow and cloud sunglasses. The two learners were both regulars who put a lot of effort and focus into the class. Lot’s of dialogue for practicing new terms. Some good giggling took place.

This was the first time I had the opportunity to observe Patrik in the classroom and found it very helpful and energizing. He took the time to review the importance of a few seemingly simple exercises, like Alphabet Listen & Point, and explained how really complex and vital its function is. And also how to make the exercise fun. It was a great learning experience for me!

Group responded well with direction to assist each other. Multiple layers of levels, 3 languages represented and one brand new learner! Liberians on this site seem very supportive of the program
