I tried something a little different with the Alphabet by having the learners use the sign language of the letters, which brought out a lot of laughter in the class; I guess it will be good practice if there is ever going to be another Silent Class with this group because they were catching on pretty fast with the finger spelling and identifying letters. There was a lot of space today for learner input in regards to what we dictated which is great because it allows them to provide input instead of just dictating what I have prepared to say. We worked on the “What do you use a ‘microwave’ for?” structure and everybody contributed an answer and dictated to their liking.

We took a quick questionnaire to find out what type of “Food-style” each of us had; turns out everybody is a “Planner”, which means everybody plans ahead for meals regarding when and what to eat according to the food groups. Then we covered the most important meal of the day: Breakfast, and doing some dictation with “tips” on eating a healthy breakfast. One of the learners said that she wakes up at 4 am to make breakfast for everyone in her family, which is crazy because at 4 am, I’m still sleeping.

**On another note, there was a consensus from the learners that class should be half an hour more, so YAY! sounds like they are really enjoying the classes.

We did a “What’s in the Kitchen” Diagram where we indicated different appliances in the kitchen: oven, stove, microwave, food processor, etc. After doing some dictation and preposition work with that, we brought the activity “out” and I asked everybody where their fridge was located in their home and such. Overall, good day.

Today’s score is N/A because even though we didn’t do anything that I had planned, everything went fine. Of course, this wasn’t intentional, it just started class with some small talk that turned into a more elaborate conversation between the two of us. Even though we didn’t do anything I had prepared, I enjoyed just talking with the learner and hearing her stories, opinions, suggestions, and struggles with learning English.

We did a “What’s in a sandwich?” Activity; we made a list of things commonly found in a sandwich and then put them all in a sentence: “There are tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, and ham in a sandwich”; somehow we missed ‘bread’ in this list. We did the same thing with “What’s in a taco?” and the school just happened to have a giant paper-mache taco that I used as a prop; which was helpful to the 2 learners who didn’t know what a taco was; and we somehow missed ‘tortilla’ in this list also until the last minute when someone remembered it.

Then we played a dice game where each number corresponded with a food group; learners rolled the dice, name a food group corresponding with their number. Then I switched it up with 3 dice and instead of just naming food items, they were supposed to come up with an actual food item with all 3 ingredients. For example, if you rolled a 3=fruit, 6=sugar/fats, and 1=grain, then your answer would be something like an apple fritter because it contains all 3 food groups. This last change in the game, threw some of the learners for a loop.

Today was very dictation heavy although there was a lot of items to work with, and I mean a lot; it felt like I carried my whole kitchen into class today. I thought it was surprising that even though some of the utensils that I presented in class, and I know these were presented before for this particular group (at least for 2 of the learners) at least twice before (such as a ladle and spatula) were still difficult for the learners to name. Which led me to think that maybe these things aren’t relevant to them and that maybe I should be using things that they would use in their homes; which I should’ve asked about. Anyways, here is “everything but the kitchen sink”:

Since it was established that this learner did not work, we changed the topic up to “talking with teachers” regarding parent-teacher conferences and asking for more information or help from the teacher regarding a child’s education. We cover things such as asking for specificity and being direct. We also touched on some cultural elements such as punishments and rewards and expected behaviors of children.

I felt like I had a grocery store in my backpack; I just kept pulling out food item after food item: oranges, celery, yogurt, rice, cheese, an egg, to name a few. This was definitely a big class for me, the first in a while. It was great seeing some familiar faces from when I was first at Hall, which was over a year ago; so it is great to know that this community is continuing to come and the class is growing. We had 2 newcomers (of which I only knew were newcomers to the community due to the fact that nobody else in the class knew who they were) who were completely involved and engaging.

Only one learner but this made teaching the module more personalized to the one learner. Although the one learner was not currently employed, we still managed some useful all-around tips about talking with anybody in a higher position and general negotiation skills such as keeping calm, and being assertive but not aggressive (2 new words for the learner).

Class today was small, 2 learners, but it worked out with only David and I being there, so there was one-on-one work. We played 2 rounds of Bingo, both which I won (it wasn’t rigged lol), and did a dialogue on calling in to a school for excusing a child. The flow of the class was good despite the size, we went through all the activities I was prepared for and we ended on time. Lots of laughing involving who was going to win or who was the fastest at finding something. Overall, pretty mellow class but the energy was still there.

This was Ruby’s first class, so “Yay” to her for taking that first scary step into teaching. As for a first class, there were some ups and downs in time management and we ran through the lesson plan really quickly but SamBones and I (Lisa) stepped in temporarily and brought the class along with some phone-number dictation and hang man with vocab that we were already working on, then Ruby ended the class with a short dialogue work.

Sam Bones brought tin cans for us to play with as telephones, which was so funny watching the learners use it. Playing telephone has turned out to be a very funny activity, some of the final statements ranged somewhere in the form of: ‘Is the spider plastic?’, ‘The guy is’, and ‘The pig is big’ (none of which were even close to the original statement except maybe the spider one). We celebrated Sam Bones’ birthday, so there was chocolate cake and singing!
