We had a new learner come in, yay! But then I told her that today was the last day at this site, so she decided to leave but I did inform her about the summer classes at Rockwood starting June 2, so hopefully she will be there, she said she would. Again, this is the last day, so we just talked about whatever the learner wanted to know about: primarily, my cultural background. So today was more of a Q/A for both me and the learner.

I didn’t bring a lesson plan, but I came on time. Due to that, things got off topic by a lot but we still had a pretty engaging conversation.

We went over the phrase “My favorite _____ is_____” with colors and seasons, then we brought in hobbies. Answers included reading, watching tv, sleeping, running, cooking, shopping, and fishing. Then we followed up the phrase by asking “Why?”

Today was quite successful and full of laughter. We did a weather forecast and provided advice as to what to do if the weather calls for a thunderstorm, snow storm, hurricane, and tornado.

Found out today that half of the learners’ dream jobs are to teachers (an Math teacher, a Spanish teacher, and an English teacher) and 2 want jobs in the health field (dentist and pediatrician), and one librarian. Interesting, indeed. And the main reason: wanting to help and work with people/children.

Today was mostly review of the emergencies we did last week. Then we ran through a simple 911 Call including: saying names slow enough so that someone can repeat/write it out, location, the emergency that is happening, and waiting for help.

Dictating and reviewing job titles and descriptions is getting a little dry; I can feel it, the students are expressing it. Will change it up for next class. More excitement.

We covered some emergencies such as house’s on fire, floods, and people having heart attacks; and a simple 911 Call to warm things up: 911. What’s your emergency? We got ice cream today as a treat which was nice with the warm weather.

We didn’t do anything that I had planned. The learner walked in and we just started talking, of course we worked on building vocabulary and pronunciation along the way, but this was definitely a more unstructured class. Despite not getting to anything I had prepared, we had a good conversation and the learner got lots of practice out of it! Next time, I will try to get things back to the lesson at hand.

After noticing that learners remembered where the letters are on the alphabet sheet more than they remember the letters themselves, on top of doing the regular Alphabet Listen and Point, I made them close their eyes and point in the general direction on the alphabet sheet where the letters were; just to see if they can distinguish between the sounds rather than focus on the letters themselves; I did this for triplets a-e-i, g-j-y, and s-x-f. Then I adapted Patrik’s “13-30” hand-raising activity to distinguish between pairs b-v; t-d; and m-n.; I also had them close their eyes for this activity just to make sure that they weren’t just looking at each other for the right answer, which is a fine tool to use. This was a cool little experiment that worked out well because learners have told me that they have to look at my lips to tell whether it’s “b” or “v”; which is also fine but I just wanted to see if they can do without looking at me.

Of course, into the meat of the class, we dictated some job titles and a simple job description. For example: photographer; A photographer takes pictures. Then we went around, everyone had a picture of a job and they had to tweak what we wrote, saying: I am a _________ and I ________. For example: I am a photographer and I take pictures.

Finally, people came to the class! We did a “Vocabulary Homework” worksheet where there are individual tasks to do regarding each vocabulary word: use a dictionary to find the definition, draw a picture, use it in a sentence, how many syllables, etc. The vocabulary theme for the day was “insects” so here the example of the insects we drew in class: Can you guess what they are?
