What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was raining and storming outside so not many learners showed up, just 3. They were all pretty advanced so we were able to keep them busy and have comprehensible side conversations. Conall led a well-paced lesson and dictations, let everyone know that classes won’t be returning there in the ensuing weeks till late Jan.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class and though less attendance, perhaps lower turnout because it’s the week after Thanksgiving? MC did great “this is a” relevant activity about Christmas lights around Portland. Key is with learner Zau, Ian will follow through with him and exchange numbers to make sure there’s no flub up this coming Thurs…

One learners second class, was a bit reluctant at first but learned soon how to rely on learners around her to get challenging tasks done. Did a couple fun Round Robins. Chatted with one learner who shared that she and her sister are going to alternate which days they come because they’re concerned their kids make too much of a mess. Is there a way to incorporate kids? Or to give them games that will keep them occupied?

What happneed: first time we changed locations in St Andrew to library location. 2 new learners integrated well. it takes some shifting around in the room to accomodate our class. MC brought in some leaves from outside as objects to work with. 3 kids came w parents, is worth having other crayons etc to entertain kids.

Learners brought in food which was really thoughtful and fun. after alpha sheet we went and did a listen and point for a while and then took a break for a while to eat food. sort of improvised some language stuff with the food (“what’s this? this is coconut jelly!”) After we moved onto some good round robins that were based on the Bellrose station change next week. Feeling pretty confident that many of our learners here are going to want to continue at Bellrose.

Amanda brought in a Smoke Alarm and that was fun, lots of dictation, we reflected to try to do a bit more interaction next time, but great class

We had one new learner, a parent I’m really glad to see making the class. the rest are regulars and its a good sized class. We talked about different activities for exercise, then did a Listen and Do for them, and I think that was fun for learners

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Na’ama brought the watershed model which worked great! We started by doing choral response on the parts of the watershed (farm, houses, river, roads, etc). We then passed around the pollutants “this is fertilizer” and then spread them on the model. Then we passed all of the items together “These are pollutants” “What?” “Pollutants!” Finally, we made it rain and watched all the pollutants run into the river and lake. After the model we did dictation: 1) People put fertilizer on their lawns. 2) Golf courses and farms use pesticides. 3) Construction sites create loose dirt. 4) Cows poop on the farm. Overall this was a very fun and visually rich lesson.

All went pretty well, except for one learner insisting on writing everyone’s names down and MC intervening on that. There was some awkwardness there but no harm done. Did pass-around with Stormwater MGMT sheets and that was fun.
