What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Liam joined us for the first time. Some of the class started asking when the last class would be, and that we should have a party and bring food, and deciding what each person would bring, so I turned this into a dictation, call and response and role play exercise. “Our last class will be March 19. Lupita will bring barbecue. Thelma, what will you bring?” Then, we did a dictation and role play about shopping and buying things, with a list I made of clothes and prices: How much is the shirt? How much does the shirt cost? How much are the socks? How much do the socks cost? The shirt is $25/ The shirt costs $25.The socks are $5, the socks cost $5, etc. We had questions about singular and plural forms, and also The socks are $5/ the pair of socks IS $5.

We counted out loud in a group, by ones, fives, tens, and hundreds and worked on pronunciation. We used a coin-grab type of exercise to practice asking and answering How much money do you have? i have…. How much money does he/she have? He/ she has… and then, after amounts, worked on ways of saying: He/ she has a lot of money, and difference between he has so much money, and he has too much money; then we talked about differences tw/ How much is it? How much does it cost? How much do I have? and How much do I need? We finished by saying and singing Can’t Buy Me Love.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Laura came and told me there would be a fire drill in a few minutes, at 10 am. So, class had to go outside with the rest, then come in, so we got started around 10:10. We did a ball throw with “My name is, your name is, his name is, her name is,” and practiced pronunciation and ease with conversation. We worked on a dialogue, “I love your___. Where did you get it?” which provoked a lot of questions as to the difference between it/this/that and these/those, and between get/buy and got/bought. We reviewed asking how much something is, how asking how much it is and how much it costs is usually the same thing, and finished with saying and singing How Much is that Doggie in the Window.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We were moved to module room in back. I didn’t get to ask Laura if this will be permanent or just for today. Excitingly, we had two new learners, and two others came for the first time since last fall. We focused on a coin grab kind of activity, and practiced saying the names of coins and their values, and did a round robin of asking each other how much money we have.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):We worked on introducing ourselves, and on accurate pronunciation of C and Z, and of B and V. It’s great to have more experienced learners in the class like Lupita and Adriana helping the “newbies”. We used store advertisement pages to practice finding items, naming them, and asking how much things cost; we had a dollar dictation; we discussed when we say “How much is” and “How much are”, and the sometimes strange difference between singular and plural, e.g.:” How much are the pants?” We named everything we could think of that we’d buy in a grocery store, and then wrote these down. Then I announced a special exhibit I’m docenting for, at the Oregon Jewish Museum, on Anne Frank, which has bilingual text in English and Spanish. We finished with How Much Is That Doggie in the Window, singing it, and going over all new words or words that are hard to pronounce.

We talked about ways these things would be said in Spanish, and different meanings (for example, between “My bad,” “I’m sorry” and “My condolences”,and then finished by talking about and writing out different ways to say goodbye.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):We are meeting in the original room #1 again. It’s really nice to see beginning level students return and not feel discouraged, that they feel safe and comfortable enough to come back. I noticed there was still some challenge with some people saying their own and others’ names, so we worked on dictations and round robins of”What is her last name?” “My last name is…” We did a listen and do with different ways of communicating: Call me, write me a letter, FAX me, text me, Skype me, come on over. which produced some good questions about what FAX is, and what we mean exactly by “Come on over”, which then led to a brief conversation about all the meanings of “over”. We started to learn a song by Jim Croce about looking at old photographs. This group is really bonding and feels like a group of friends.

I used a couple of dictations, one of them the small talk example from the module, and the other from a YouTubed video clip from the TV show Big Bang Theory that showed another example of small talk attempts. We did a listen and do with: call me, write me a letter, email me, text me, come on over. Finally, we did a call and response, then a karaoke, with Jo Dee Messina’s fun song I’m Alright, which has a lot of words but is full of small talk-y phrases. I taught them the chorus and the first of the three verses, and I plan to teach the second verse next week and the last verse the week after; by then I think we’ll all be able to sing or at least follow the song all the way through.

We did a brainstorm on the names of cities and towns near Gresham, which led to a fun thing, students spelling for me the (complicated) names of some towns in Mexico! We did a listen and do using directional words. I did a dictation of addresses in the area, which led to great questions and a really good discussion about how we say numbers in the USA. We finished with a song, which led to some great vocabulary questions. The class is really jelling, with people helping each other out and connecting much more than I’d seen before; it’s really feeling for the first time like a little community! We were once again in the small room way in the back; Laura said we’ll be there from now on and apologized profusely for that, but I told her it’s okay, and later, the students told me they like it better there, anyway.
