What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):Verenice and my first time at Hall Elementary. We got there just in the nick of time; Verenice had a difficult time getting here from the west side during rush hour. We had 14 new learners, and already need to make more alphabet sheets. Laura Hernandez would like to know how many students we have each time. Verenice did a great job leading us all through some fun activities: dictations using the names and values of coins (“This is a penny. These are pennies. This is a dime. That is a dime.”) and then call and response; listen and do using methods of payment (cash, check, credit card, online); and then having students with coins asking and answering: How much money do you have? I have 13 cents.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):We had 11 students including one new student and a few who came weeks ago and came back, so that felt good. I used a couple of dictations, one of them the small talk example from the module, and the other from a YouTubed video clip from the TV show Big Bang Theory that showed another example of small talk attempts. We did a listen and do with: call me, write me a letter, email me, text me, come on over. Finally, we did a call and response, then a karaoke, with Jo Dee Messina’s fun song I’m Alright, which has a lot of words but is full of small talk-y phrases. I taught them the chorus and the first of the three verses, and I plan to teach the second verse next week and the last verse the week after; by then I think we’ll all be able to sing or at least follow the song all the way through.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Kind of a low turnout and lower energy tonight. People kind of trickled in. It could also be the cold weather. We talked about ways to introduce ourselves and common greetings, wrote these and did round robins practicing pronunciation and voice modulation, wrote and practiced responses (I’m Alright, I’m OK, I’m fine, I’m great, I’m not bad) and finished by reviewing the song I’m Alright.November 12, 2014 at 7:42 pm #4181David RutiezerSpectatorLesson Title:Oregon Geography

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Kind of a low energy day, again. We talked about ways we apologize for things we didn’t even do, in order to avoid a confrontation, by doing a few dictations, call and response, then role playing, for example: Oh, sorry for staring; you look like an old roommate of mine. We talked about ways these things would be said in Spanish, and different meanings (for example, between “My bad,” “I’m sorry” and “My condolences”,and then finished by talking about and writing out different ways to say goodbye.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a nice, mellow class for our last day here. Some students left early to take a citizenship class next door. We used the information about the upcoming potluck as a dictation, call and response, and round robin. We also used various pictures of places in Oregon for a dictation and round robin to practice asking and answering: Have you ever been there? Have you ever gone there? Did you ever go there?
