What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with the typical alphabet sheet warm up. Then we looked a picture that Zadok had printed off and pointed out some vocabulary words. Then we did a Q and A dialogue/dictation that built on the vocabulary we had learned. Then we tried to do the Q and A as fast as possible. We then moved into a video, where students attempted to write down words they could here as the video played. We watched the video a couple of times while students tried to do this. Finally, we watched the video again while students organize sentence strips that Zadok had prepared (they were a transcript from the video).

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Zadok prepared a number of questions beforehand for students to ask a real-life librarian. They included, “Do you mind if we record you? When is the library open? What are some of the services available at the library? What is your favorite part of your job?” All Q&A was recorded. Then the group went to a room in the library and began to do a dictation using the recorded dialogue. After this activity, the group began a scavenger hunt for several books that Zadok had picked out beforehand. A list of books was given to the students, with one pair starting at the bottom, and the other at the top. The idea was to have a race to see who could get the most books. This activity involved students interfacing with the library catalogue computers individually, and more or less finding their books on their own. At the end we warmed down by going over call numbers. Unfortunately none of the students expressed an interest in using the library on their own.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began with alphabet sheet exercises as a quick warm up, and then moved on to name yelling and spelling. Joe led a dictation exercise that focused on theme of day’s lesson. We did a dictation activity that used Joe’s library card. Several of the phrases on the card were spoken out loud and students wrote them down. Following this dictation we did a word/document search with a library card application from Multnomah County Library. We then moved into a separate activity that involved using realia Joe had brought from the library: about 10 books. We went around round-robin style, with question and answer dialogue, identifying the name of the book and then the author. We finished with a dialogue pertaining to library membership guidelines.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
The class began with Jessica leading alphabet sheets as a warm-up. We practiced spelling our names in the first write-it-down exercise, spelling them quickly and naturally. We then began a write-this-down exercise that was in Q and A format. Some of the questions were: Do you have a library card? Do you like to read? What is your favorite book? After each question, each person would repeat it and then write down the answer of the next person. This exercise was especially interesting because it brought out the diversity of the group. Favorite books ranged from Russian classics, to Japanese and Spanish popular novels. We finished the class doing a document search with a library card application sheet.
