What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Our room in this new time is occupied by a story hour right before our class- so since it was about noon and they still hadn’t left the room (the parents like to network after class), one of the library staff told us we could use the smaller conference room. Maureen and I were a bit hesitant to the change at first, but it’s great! Felt like a more intimate space. But, either room works! We talked about how it might be good if class moved to 12:30, or at least we can keep the smaller conference room in mind in the future.

We had two new learners today, and one who had been gone all summer! Glad to see the new time is getting out there. New learners fit well into the class, and quickly warmed up and weren’t too shy. Maureen adjusted well in the alphabet listen and point to accommodate all skill levels. Maureen started with sentence dictations about back to school, then we did a doc search on information about school starting, and then we made a list of things students put in their backpack, and did a round robin of each item after writing it down. Good mix of activities! One highlight for me was explaining the difference between a textbook and a regular book. Great class- lots of learning!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I lied last week when I called my lesson our final time talking about the eclipse, whoops! But Maureen had fun information for folks today. We dictated some sentences today with lots of animal names, and words like “stoic”. Then some round robins with pictures of animals from these sentences. Then we did a seek & find with an interesting article on animals in the eclipse and ended with our favorite scrabble spelling game. Got some good feedback from Matthew at the end of class on how things he’s seen differently at other places during his shadowing, and I think we’re both looking forward to utilizing that info in the following weeks. Class atmosphere was great as usual, even with some new folks in the mix today. Good, solid class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

We dictated some interesting sentences about viewing safety for the eclipse next week. After three weeks of talking about the eclipse, I think learners were still interested and not bothered! This is in part due to the interesting lessons we’ve delivered, like today’s. Next we did two round robins with “Do you have eclipse sunglasses?” and “Take a pair of eclipse glasses!” because MAUREEN BOUGHT GLASSES FOR EVERYONE! Big cheers to that. Not at lot of people already had them, and I know they’re running low now, so that was fun. We ended with a spelling game with scrabble tiles; after Maureen switched two learners, we felt we had very evenly matched teams and it was an exceptionally good game today. Julia felt more involved after Maureen set her up as a coach/motivator for one team, and I helped the other. Great class full of laughter and teamwork!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Maureen did a great job thinking creatively with the Eclipse model. We started with some dictated sentences about what an eclipse is, then we did a doc search on a diagram (I think) Maureen made showing what the placements of the moon, earth, and sun during the eclipse. We ended with a fun activity where Maureen drew the eclipse path on a map of the US and learners had to fill in what states it was going through- a fun challenge for learners and instructors. Again, we have a great group going where more advanced learners are happily helping other learners. We ended with a great challenge for Julia (seeing impaired) to figure out a game we can play in class that she can participate in.

Patrik stepped up and led class today when transportation issues made the originally planned field trip unable to happen. This was the largest class we’ve had here at this time in a while, and it was great! We did alphabet listen & point, had folks quickly spell their names and everyone wrote them down, and wrote the title of todays lessons, and then spent the rest of class using a native plant poster to do listen & point. The high energy of the instructors and learners made this unplanned class go very well.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Maureen’s lesson focused on Olympic National Park, which was a cool way to use the Great Outdoors module. We did alphabet listen & point, yell & spell, then dictated sentences about ONP with lots of new words like “monument” “heritage” and “biosphere”. Maureen then showed some photos she had taken at ONP which was a good break after some heavy dictations. Then we did a round robin passing around a map of ONP, dictated another sentence about ONP, and then a seek and find on maps of ONP. We split into two groups for this and learners had fun racing to find the words. Last, we ended with making words we’d been using in the dictations with scrabble tiles, again as a competition between two teams. All the learners seemed highly engaged in the competition, and it was fun!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Small class full of regular learners. We did alphabet listen & point, and then dictated lots of fun sentences about Portland Parks with neat facts. The interesting + relatable nature of the sentences led to lots of side conversations, but everyone participated and it was fun/good English practice in our small, friendly group. Next we did a round robin with “Have you ever been to Forest Park?” and we learned no one had! Then we passed around picnic items, such as a Frisbee and badminton. Then a listen and find on a document of picnic random facts, and ended with a competition between learners to spell previously practiced words with scrabble tiles. Good, connected and engaged class.

After the fact, Patricia passed around a picture of what we talked about in the sentence. Class ended with reading some Aesop fables about birds. This was fun. We read it all together first, slowly, then Patricia invited learners to individually read it outloud for the class. Lots of outgoing learners were excited to do this. It was an engaged class with lots of working together among learners.
