It was just him which in a way was nice so I could get to know his level (and him) a bit better. He brought me some gifts from his wife’s business which was so sweet. So we talked about the business a bit and I had him write some sentences down so he could practice talking about it in English. We also worked a bit with pronunciation of Ch/Sh and then reviewed questions from last week. This led into him telling me about his past job as a military police in Colombia. Woah does he have quite a story!! Holy moly. So I also had him write sentences down about that so he could also practice telling his ‘historia’ en ingles :) He said he wished we had more time together. I’m pretty sure he’ll be coming to the class consistently from now on, which is great! We need more in the group :)

We practiced ‘Are there rainforests in….”. Next was a fun word cloud that I found with words associated to rainforests. We then did a cloze activity about the Amazon and the importance of it and ended with a dialogue about the current fires happening there. We will continue and also wrap up this topic next week as it’s the last class before our 2 week break.

We wrapped up our ‘Amazon on fire’ unit but of course talked about 9/11 a bit as I was sure it would come up. We did a few short dialogues, a cloze activity, practiced some past tense and used images to review animals of the rainforest. :)

He is so interesting, I’m glad I’ve had some one on one time to get to know his story a bit more…

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 3What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Meh, not the best class back after a break- I was a little off, they seemed tired and it was cold in the building! They were telling me it was even colder in the factory and didn’t seem too happy about it (they have also all been working a lot of overtime so they seemed tired). Also, I had a cool idea to do a module on world cultures, where we’d learn about different customs/traditions of various cultures talking about differences, unique interesting facts, etc.. but the truth is, I didn’t plan very well and got overwhelmed and nervous before the class so I totally ditched and threw together a plan during lunch break. All in all it was fine and I know we’ll get back into the swing of things, it just was one of those ‘not very bueno’ classes- it happens! The cool thing about the class was we did have a few side discussions about issues relevant to them so ultimately I guess having that space every once in a while is totally fine as long as no one is lost- and… no one was :)

We learned the names of the continents and pointed out various well-known countries on each one. We did a dictation/round robin with interesting facts of each of the continents. We talked about Mongolia and what
nomadic means and I learned a bit about the Hmong culture/way of life from one of the learners. Overall they seemed very interested and engaged and we will continue with this theme next week :) -
