Just one learner but we had lots of good/very relevant practice (she loves to talk about shopping, and more specifically how she’s good at saving money) So I felt like it would be a great topic to kick off the summer term with. Today started with a quick alphabet warm up, we learned the names of different types of stores (grocery, department, sporting goods, etc…) and gave examples of each one. We then ended with a structured dialogue about stores we’re going to go to. Fun class!

All 5 learners came and everyone seemed refreshed and excited to be back. We had a lot of fun talking about different stores we go to and items that we might buy at those stores. We also got to practice some grammar related to non-count nouns. I knew they would also love this topic, they’re always talking about deals and discounts they find at various stores. We’ll have lots to talk about over the next few weeks :)

We then did the title of the class and focused on garage sales via a dialogue and a cloze activity. We then practiced talking about which grocery stores we go to and why and ended with a fun information gap activity which compared prices from 2 different grocery stores. We didn’t quite finish that so will start there next week!

We welcomed our new learner by first learning eachothers names. Then we practiced talking about how long we’ve worked at Purdy as well our as job titles. We then moved onto the topic of the day, first reviewing the types of stores and then talked about different items we might find at each store. Lastly, we practiced a mini dialogue about where we would find said items.

We looked at chart and everyone figured out what their sign is. We practiced a few mini dialogues related to the topic and then looked at some adjectives that describe our signs. Fun! We also practiced language related to predictions and next week will read our horoscopes.

I had ideas in my mind but was thinking I would just have my 1 ‘regular’ learner but to my surprise, I was greeted by a new student upon entering the class (he was a little early ;) So that threw me off a tad but I ‘winged’ it quite well I must say. SInce the regular learner usually comes late, I was able to sort of evaluate the new ss and practiced some get to know you type questions with him. Kind of nice that they are at about the same level so when learner 2 came in, we transitioned nicely. So we practiced some basic questions in the present and past and then looked at a map of the U.S. They are both interested in seeing a good map of Portland since they live in Vancouver and are interested in getting to Portland a little better so I’ll bring one next week!

We didn’t get too much into the details of the fire as I first wanted to introduce some basics so that’s what we did. Some activities included a dictation about the Amazon and how important it is to us, all of us. Then we learned the names of some of the animals found in the forests and also learned a bit about the indigenous people of the Amazon. I’m looking forward to working with this topic for the next few weeks…
