First class back after a long winter break. Small, with 2 lear ers and 5 teachers. To take the pressure off the learners we sat down with them, instead of standing over them. There was a lot of information and I think it was received well. Perhaps we could have done more role playing to practice responding to hypothetical ICE agents, but other than that, the class went well.February 3, 2017 at 11:02 am #8414Zadok TaylorSpectatorLesson Title: Know Your Rights

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Krysie arrived early. Our one learner came at 6:05. K felt that she could have been more prepared. She would have written a better dialogue, that would have flowed better, with shorter segments, that would have elicited more talking. She did feel that there were good transitions. Krysie felt that the lesson would have been easier for her if there had been more learners. She has learned that it is easier to teach larger classes. When they are very small it feels more like tutoring, which she doesn’t enjoy. Krysie wasn’t sure of her level, but thought that she was a junior partner. She graduated in 9/15 and has been pretty productive (my assessment.) I felt that she tended to understate her skill and overstate her anxiety, and I felt that she has good charisma and made me and the learner feel confident by her evident skill and maturity.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a little late while we waiting for learners to show up. It was a small class but usual for Irvington on this day. We did some dictation and choral response about Friends of Trees, a couple round robin questions about volunteering, and listen and point with a couple documents. We also did a listen and do activity that sort of resembled a round robin activity.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We went through Know your rights part 2. David worked on condesing a heavy agenda for the night and had the group engaged. Megan was a great help with some new ideas for David to try. The lesson was dense, but we talked afterwards and brainstromed some ideas to bullet point ideas from the plan so that all learners from all levels can stay engaged and learn with more dynamic activities to work with. The class tonight was back to a fuller class, with 7 learners!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was a complete outline, Trimet System Map main prop, brought enough for all learners and DJ. Benjamin felt that his arrival time was not optimum, but he prepared DJ for late arrival and they were engaged when he arrived at 6 PM and began the lesson. Used multiple techniques with variety interspersed to keep all engaged well. Reordered learners for optimum placement of advanced and beginning level learners to help each other.
Lesson included a Q and A format which students readily learned.March 15, 2017 at 8:32 am #8546David ThompsonSpectatorPlease add one learner to the Irvington Elementary class of 3/14/2017: sparuzonz8.
Also, there were 8, not 7 learners.
