What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did alphabet listen and point for about 30 minutes because there were 3 new students and they needed some extra time to become familiar with the activity. Other activities where yell and spell, the title of today’s lesson, a resume document search, a round robin, and a game of Bingo with employment related words and chocolate kisses as prizes.
Hannah accidentally began prompting the document search with sentence from a different resume. Luckily it only took two sentence to realize what had happen. While it was a little confusing (and demoralizing for Hannah), in the spirit of the show must go on, she did a good job of metaphorically dusting off and continuing the lesson. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A number of first-time shadowers arrived for today’s lesson. Patrik went over some of the curriculum with them. the lesson consisted of alphabet listen and point including some combinations of letters, yell and spell and some dictations, a document search of a map of downtown and a modified this is an apple for water bottle, sunscreen, and walking shoes.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Hannah arrived promptly with her lesson plan that she had read over and had great questions about. Most of the learners were there early, but a few came in during alphabet listen and point. She did alphabet listen and point, yell and spell, the dictation progressions, a number of round robins, and a great activity designed to guess her profession. The activity was designed so that we could model it, but the learners were so engaged they jumped right in and we only had to encourage them every once in a while. Overall this was a very successful dress rehearsal and we had two new learners.

Today, Saint Joseph’s requested that we have class in the basement. Most learners were early or right on time and they even set up the tables and arranged seating before class began.
Two new shadowers arrived before the lesson: Kate and Natalie. Patrik gave them a brief introduction to the program before beginning the lesson. For alphabet listen and point, Patrik continued to build on the skills from last lesson with harder combinations of letters in quadruplets and quintuplets. SXXS proved challenging to many learners.
Patrik brought an infographic about the three branches of the US government and organized the dictation around the information in document before passing it out for a document search activity. The lesson was wrapped up with quick search for a few states on the US map.Lesson Title: Produce Section/How much are mangoes

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Patrik led a vigorous round of alphabet listen and point. This was my first lesson at this site, but the learners have shown a lot of improvement in this area. After Yell and Spell, Patrik led the group in a “This is a mango” activity. He brought a good variety of produce and a few household necessities from the grocery store. The learners passed around over 10 items before the end of the class. Patrik wasn’t able to stay long at the end, so we agreed to do the self evaluation over text.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Laurel arrived early and was waiting when I arrived just before 9:45 am; Lucas arrived shortly afterwards. Only one learner arrived before 10:00 am, but Laurel started right on time. While she was doing the alphabet sheet, two other learners arrived.
She incorporated strings of letter into the alphabet sheet along with the individual letters. She had a number of sentences for dictation about fireworks and the fourth of July. She also brought some fireworks for a “This is an Apple” like activity and she had a document search with images of some key vocabulary words from the dictations. The lesson ended with a video of the Schoolhouse Rock Fireworks song.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was supposed to be Hannah’s dress rehearsal, but unfortunately no learners came. We all took turns walking around to see if anyone was around that we could invite to classes, but there weren’t many people outside. On a positive note, Ramin provided great insights about his experiences with PPT.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The MC, DJ, and shadowers all arrived early and debriefed before the lesson began. Na’ama did a great job of informing us about the predictable parts of the lesson plan and the unpredictable parts. All 6 the learners arrived by 9:00 am and we did a brief round of Alphabet Listen and Point and Yell and Spell. We left for Reed Canyon at approximately 9:20 am. We were all able to fit in the 15 passenger van that Na’ama drove.
We arrive at Reed Canyon and Na’ama and Ian organized us into a buddy system so that each learner had a leader/assistant/shadower buddy that would help with the oral dictations. After that, we went to the amphitheater and met up with Zak the Reed Canyon Manager. He talked to the group about his role and explained the purpose of the fish ladder. Na’ama did an excellent job simplifying his statements into oral dictation sentences for the learners to listen to and repeat.
We walked a short loop around the canyon and Na’ama and Ian took turn point out and naming native plants. The learns repeated the names of the native plants, all of which were reinforced a few times during the walk.
At the end of the loop, we made our way back to the van and returned to Kelly where we quickly did loyalty cards for the learners.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I (Zoe) arrived at 5:40 and when I arrived Santiago texted me to say he was having issues with transportation and would be about 10 minutes late. It was my first time at the Bellrose Station complex, so I walked around until I could confirm which space was the community room. I sat at one of the picnic tables outside to wait for learners. It wasn’t long before a boy wanted to play ball. We played catch for a while, but I was able to talk with a few parents in the area about the classes as well. They were aware of the classes. The boy’s friend came to play too.
Santiago arrived at 6:10. We played with the boys and a few other children who came by for the rest of the afternoon. At 7:30 we had a productive reflection about recruiting more learners and issues of safety in the learning space. We both agreed that precautions need to be taken and ideally no one should be alone in a room with learners or with children.
