Both Joshua and I were impressed that, as nice as yesterday was, that anyone showed up for class. It just goes to show how important it is for them to commit to learning the English language, and they work very hard at it. One of our students has only been here for 2 months and is struggling a bit to understand the whole “What is your address” concept, such as what, actually, does “address” refer to? Anyways, Joshua really syncs well with this group, and I can see how the students are warming up to his gentle ways. Our only Spanish-speaker holds up well here, and willing to help and share with the others-whose language doesn’t resemble anything close to Spanish, or English! However, this group loves to laugh, and especially they love anything that is a game-like activity.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):Lots of hilarious laughter with the muffin tin! Joshua had a nice lesson plan worked out, but we ended not following most of it. We did some dictation, but really didn’t get into role-play since the “this is a…” took so long to get through. Had a rousing game of Concentration, with candy as a prize for scoring a match…and as the 7:30 mark came, there were still some matches to be made, and nobody wanted to quit playing, so we went over a bit. They really like their games. Fun evening, nice to get to meet Joshua, and we will have great classes together for the next 4 weeks.

The class went well. There was the “getting used to the other” since Mary Louise and Sam were meeting for the first time. But there was enough to keep all 4 of us busy. There are a few higher level learners with a few lower level, and then 1 or 2 very newbies, and we interspersed everyone to make sure that each had easy access to help the other.

Today was Lisa’s final class. Patrik was there to participate and observe. Nothing too outstanding or crazy happened tonight. There was 1 new learner. Another rousing game of Hot Potato, which everyone loves! All in all, pretty smooth evening. NOTE: For those of you that teach at Rockwood, please note our new file. It’s not entirely put together yet, but please keep things neat and separated, such as blank attendance sheets from filled-out sheets, like information with like, etc.. ..Does anyone have a recipe box with letter dividers that they can part with? So that we can put the loyalty cards in alphabetical order for easier location? Please reply to this conversation if you do!!!

We welcomed Jane, who is visually impaired, into our class and although it was a silent class, we found many different ways in which Jane was able to participate.
She had no problem in joining in all the grown men, tossing a large toilet paper roll from one to another, each one reciting a new word that they just learned such as flashlight, spoons, first aid kit, and other words related to emergency preparedness in a rousing game of “Hot Potato.” Much hilarity ensued! Lisa used last week’s silent class to better prepare for this one, and it went very smoothly!

Nice mix of learners today. Most of them were regular attendees, with one new woman brought by a returning student. David had a full plan, and there was lots of dictation. Too much, perhaps, but we discussed many other options to deal with the same material but in a different, more engaging manner. Regardless, our students were total champs today!

This was Lisa’s 1st silent class. It went well, but she wished that she worked out better hand signals and directives. Except for a few minor stumbles, the class was completely engaged and there was lots of sharing and helpfulness going around between students. And, we had two young brothers that were new and they totally were into the learning. Lisa will have a chance to do a second silent class next week, so this was a good dress rehearsal to iron out the rough spots. .

We had several new folks today. Lisa brought an emergency kit with her and we went over the Red Cross recommendations for emergencies. Words like “tornado” were fun, since it’s the same in Spanish (everyone was a Spanish-speaker) and “tsunami” was fun also! Everything went smoothly tonight.

There were some rough spots as far as the class went, but I think though the self eval after the class we worked discussed some potential ways to deal with particular situations and found ways to potentially smooth them out.
David and I are working on becoming familiar with our particularities and understanding how to roll with each others’ teaching styles. David brought a friend, Tokiko, which I understood she is a TESOL student working with Japanese language-learners. She not only wanted to observe, she wanted to be a student as well because she would like to be more proficient in English herself.

My favorite part of the night was when we had the students stand back-to-back to read the dialogue, so that they couldn’t see each other…just like when you talk on the phone. The dialogue was that you were calling someone to leave a message, and you had to spell out your name and when it was Vulfrano’s turn, he spelled his name out like a champ without having to look! And although we applauded after each student did his dialogue, we cheered for Vulfrano!!

We had three new students tonight! Also nice to see a few students from when I taught a year ago make an appearance. We played telephone and most everything was pretty garbled when it got to the last person. Although Lisa initially was not sure if there would be an issue with strangers whispering closely into each others’ ear, everyone seemed quite comfortable with it. We were split up into groups to work on the dictation/role play, which took up much of the class time. Each group had either Lisa or I or one of the assistants helping the students along.
And, as it turns out, Lisa and I actually know each other (what a small world) from when we were both taiko drummers at PSU, so we already know a bit about working together as a team, which will totally enhance the class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):David and I met for the first time and we will be c9-facilitating this class. It was a new class and we only had 4 students. I knew one of them from the night before and the other I know from when I was here in the Fall. With five minutes left, David decided to teach Pattycake, Pattycake, Baker’s Man, or “pat a cake” which he shared from his own childhood. He dictated it, and everyone caught on to the apostrophe in Baker’s, and it involved plenty of TPR. Afterwards, the three of us discussed the possible issue of teaching a nursery rhyme to adults, wondering if they would feel insulted. I didn’t notice that any student felt uncomfortable with it and besides..it is something that they can bring home to the babies in their own life, or can teach to the parents. Great idea David!

My first day back after taking a break…Patrik was demonstrating the module to the above 5 assistants who were mostly new and observing how the class functions. The students were all Spanish speakers except for one. Both Casey and Daniel are in the PSU program and were valuable in explaining some new terminology (in the educational sense) when we all were chatting amongst ourselves before class actually started.
