I offered some notes I made at the end of class so that we can start a foundation that is closest to patriks methodology as possible. Kate was very receptive. Great class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):The class began late due to the MC and DJ getting there late, as well as learners arriving after 6:10. By 6:20 we were off to a start. Keli was rusty from being off for a few months, but it came together. Keli realized mid class that she had erred in not bringing tactile plants samples, so as to better engage Patrick Elijah. There was connection between high/lower level learners- Overall a great class. Happy to be back at it!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We met in the rectory basement at St. Andrews due to heat and construction. We are on week 2 of a record heat wave and St. Andrews is painting the gym and bathrooms of the community center. It is remarkable to see how committed these learners are to their process. Everyone was accommodating and flexible as far as changing venue. They are an inspiring, dedicated group. It is wonderful to watch their confidence and skill grow.

The following is Liam’s description of the class on 8/10/17 – “Mix of Alphabet call out letters; Round robin using dictated sentences and printed handouts re: upcoming total solar eclipse; “path” was the English word that represented greatest challenge of understanding this evening: when one learner made the connection to his comprehension, this learners whole face lit up; visage and eyes brightened, with a resounding smile. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
The class started at about 6:10. The learners all did a great job staying engaged despite the fact that the Oscar Romero room is warm, even with the fans. Kate did an excellent job as MC, incorporating a great mix of dictation and dialogue practice, and using Scrabble cards for spelling practice in disguised as fun. I think it was just what we’ve been needing on Thursdays to shake it up. The content was very simple but the practice so important. It also brought up interesting questions during reflection around why some learners might not feel comfortable to call 911. A great reminder to consider multiple perspectives in this work, always. My son, Severin, had to join us due to lack of childcare this evening, and I really appreciated the way Kate made an effort to include him in the lesson, and he LOVED meeting everyone.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started off somewhat slow and a bit bumpy once people started to show up later, but it was a very energize class and after the MC moved some of the learners around, they became very engaged and helped each other out. Alphabet sheet and yell and spell were done first. We went over the Rose Garden 100 Year Celebration with dictations and round robins, using photos of the garden.

There were some complex sentences as well, with the most challenging words being trial, consistently, and exhibition.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class is a wonder to behold! The learners are so dedicated to their own learning and to helping their fellow learners. We have some new learners that have very little experience with English and they have been shown care, attention and support by everyone around that table! Two regular return learners are making great improvements and gaining confidence. Great to experience an Hispanic learner assisting a newly arrived learner from Viet Nam.
