Today was the first day of classes this school year at Hall Elementary. The class started late because the learners were getting registered into the SUN system. There was a fairly even split of learners who had been to the class before and new learners. People seemed a bit quiet at first and hesitant to crowd around one table. By the yell+spell and dictations there was much more helping each other and laughing, especially about a certain item that a learner had purchased that day. Learners seemed really engaged with the Walgreens coupons search at the end.October 12, 2016 at 9:11 pm #8117Jenny MinerSpectatorCopy the text below and paste into a comment, then fill it out! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today there was a strong learner who brought her mother and another learner who brought her grandchild, so lots of maternal looking-after and care was going on. Started off a little quiet and calm, with fewer learners than the first class. During dictation, people got in the habit of asking for help on specific words and spelling them out loud to each other. One learner was new and pretty shy but also smiling a lot. Energy got a little lagging at the end of dictation, was brought up with listen and do, and then went down again at the end as I had them write down the listen+do verbs. The grandchild spontaneously added some original decorations to the loyalty cards.October 17, 2016 at 10:16 pm #8137Jenny MinerSpectatorLesson Title: Shop til you drop

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
There were only about five or six learners at 6pm but about five minutes later, three or four more showed up, including two new students. Everyone was just able to fit around one table. People seemed more at ease with the alphabet and yell+spell, like they know the drill. About 20 minutes in three slightly higher level learners showed up and sat at one end of the table. This made the group kind of lopsided in terms of skill level, usually their side would finish the dictations a few minutes before the other side. We did a dialogue and everyone got a lot of practice returning pants that were too small. One learner was pretty slow at the dialogue, but people were helpful and patient.October 19, 2016 at 9:24 pm #8149Jenny MinerSpectatorLesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today was the first day that class was held in the open library area. Two oddly shaped tables made being close enough to share a bit hard, but once more people arrived there wasn’t too much space in between people. Today was also the first day that I did the “this is an eraser–a what?” activity, first with dictation and then doing it with several objects I brought, including a voters’ pamphlet, which proved to be amusingly hard to pronounce. A few higher level learners who usually come weren’t there today, so it was interesting to see others who weren’t used to taking a stab at spelling try it out. I simplified some of the dictations because a few key spellers weren’t there. More dialogue, laughs, and conversations than I’ve seen from this group before.October 19, 2016 at 9:37 pm #8150Jenny MinerSpectatorLesson Title: Vote of confidence

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
I brought coupon/newspaper things from Fred Meyer which people seemed much more interested in and stimulated by than just a single sheet print out (what I have used the past two classes). People seem to “know the routine” now – the here it is, the spelling, and sharing/copying answers. I’ve also noticed that there are certain people who like to try spelling things (from various levels, including lower levels) and a few people who will wait until the people around them get it right to copy it down (mostly lower level). Learners have also started looking back in their journals for the spelling on “today’s lesson is called” and other repeated phrases and also using the materials I’ve given them to see the spelling on things. Realizing now that I forgot to do names after two people came in late, thought about it at the time, but didn’t remember to stop the activity to do names.October 26, 2016 at 8:41 pm #8178Jenny MinerSpectatorLesson Title: Vote early, vote often

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
I just realized again that I forgot to do names when two people came in after the yell+spell… I just wrote a reminder to myself for next time. Today we had most of the regulars and no one new. After a few late comers came in the table was pretty balanced in terms of skill level. People were using the ballot guide as well as each other for spelling help and I noticed a few people who are usually hesitant to spell on their own trying it out by copying off the ballot guides. At one point there was a fly buzzing around and people were trying to kill it with the rolled up voters guides which got everyone laughing. Energy consistently went up throughout class–quiet beginning; chatting/helping/consulting throughout the dictations and work with the voters guides; laughing and joking at the end during the “this is a glue stick” exercise. Especially funny when one learner got stuck in between two items both coming towards him. Best sense of togetherness and connection I’ve felt so far.October 31, 2016 at 11:05 pm #8192Jenny MinerSpectatorLesson Title: Trick or Treat

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was a much smaller group than normal (only 4 compared to the usual 9-13) but energy felt focused and well-sustained. We spent almost the entire time making bingo sheets by writing Halloween vocab words with accompanying sketches. It took about an hour to dictate and draw 16 vocab words, which was longer than I expected. Then we played bingo and there was some suspension as it took a while for the first person to get bingo. One learner always asks me right away about how to spell the word and if they’re doing the task correctly. Another learner seems to find this funny. The group thought another learner had really good drawings and were making jokes about that. People got candy once they got their bingo and there was more candy from the SUN staff.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today the group was pretty fast at the dictation and all 10 around one table which helped people copy more easily. One mother daughter pair who usually always sit together were separated by one person in between them. The daughter is a pretty high skill learner and usually takes care of her mom. The leaner in between them was also a high skill learner, in particular with spelling. The mom finished more quickly than normal because the learner in between had bigger and clearer handwriting and would turn his paper and correct the mom. I noticed many learners correcting each other’s spelling today. One learner was resistant to having her work corrected and has expressed that she’s really tired. We looked at a map of electoral college votes and wrote in the state names.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was the first time I had an assistant. There were only a couple learners at the beginning, but more filtered in as time went on. One even came with her alphabet sheet already out. I finally remembered to do names again once more people had come in! We wrote down various ingredients to make pumpkin cookies and did round robin with the spices, cups, teaspoons, etc. We did some listen and point with the recipe and listen and do with verbs from the recipe. And then ate the cookies! Students made the connection between the recipe, ingredients, and cookies. Pretty lively class, fair amount of banter. I only did short dictations today, which probably wasn’t very challenging for the higher level learners, but produced a lot of student-student interaction.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The first part of class was very focused as we listened and wrote down parts of the poem Still I Rise. Attention was highest when they were listening to the poem after they had written it down. During listen and point and the last half hour of class there was a fair amount of talking and discussion about the recent elections. People were joking about how our class should go rob a Trump bank and there was a feeling of “we’re in it together”. There was also some poking fun between learners with the higher level of comfort among folks, which once or twice I thought might be making a few people uncomfortable. It also served to pull a few shyer people out of their shells.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today was the smallest group this semester. Energy was a little low because of this, especially with choral response. We took some extra time in with the alphabet practicing some of the letters and did our last and middle names during yell+spell. We did dictation from a short clip of Charlie Brown where Lucy tricks CB into kicking a football and he ends up falling down in a comical way. I saved the end for the learners to predict if Lucy was going to trick him or not. There was a funny misunderstanding with the spelling of “got” and “gato” in Spanish and also making fun of Charlie Brown for being a bit dramatic. It was a short clip, but students were engaged in following along with the words and speaking along with the dialogue. I asked them to translate it bit by bit and after getting through a long sentence, someone said “we’re translators!”November 16, 2016 at 8:42 pm #8261Jenny MinerSpectatorLesson Title: Seriously?

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Class started a little late today because people arrived later than normal and the site manager was chatting with us. She also made announcements about continuing classes in January and gave out information about knowing your rights and related workshops/meetings. We did first names and last names with the Yell+Spell and some basic dictation about the outcomes of the election. We talked a little bit about how Hilllary won the popular vote but did not win the electoral college and people’s opinions/reactions to this. One learner has trouble copying/writing and was a bit slower than other learners, I noticed the other learners pull out their phones once or twice as they were waiting. We did fill in the blanks with the song “seriously?” from a recent This American Life episode. Student seemed engaged and eager to fill in the blanks and smiled when they were able to predict the repeated word “seriously.”
