First class, and we mostly got to know each other. We gave our personal stories plus talked about the jobs that the students perform. We also did alphabet and pronunciation activities. Students are enthusiastic!

Today we went into the laundry room (where 3 of the 4 students work-the other is in housekeeping) and spent a lot of time talking about what the students do and why. They demonstrated if they couldn’t tell me, but they were able to explain pretty clearly the processes they use. I wrote as many vocabulary words as possible so we could work on pronouncing and using these words throughout the remaining classes. For this class we worked a lot on pronouncing and writing the words correctly. We also went off on a tangent about some past tense, as well as what kind of requests they get from guests.

This class was more focused on speaking and then writing in complete sentences using words that we covered in the last two classes. The students are excellent at helping each other out-one student in particular is a bit more advanced so she is helping the others, which seems to be helping her confidence-especially with spelling. Also had the students make flashcards so we can come up with activites later-so far class has been light on games and activities but I haven’t felt the need to do any of that yet. We are having a good time and getting things done without them.

The return of Pushma! An OK class overall. We have been going back and forth between 2 different rooms, one of which is much nicer than the other. This class, we were in the ‘lesser’ of the rooms. Also, students and myself seemed a little tired. On this class I worked a lot on the words we will be using most when describing processes, plus had a simple sentence unscramble using the processes they described to me in the second class. We then did some writing using the processes, which didn’t add to the excitement. However, the goal was to put it down on paper in this class, then next class we will spend quite a bit of time in the laundry room and in some areas where Raquel spends her day.

Much better class than Wednesday’s! We did a little bit of review over what we talked about Wednesday, then we got out of the class and into the student’s environment-this stimulated conversation and ideas that I don’t think would have come up otherwise. Afterwards, we went back to the classroom and went over further what we talked about. We wrote everything out and I feel like the students will retain most of what we had talked about, since they use what we talked about on a daily basis.

I tried something different today-handouts, with cloze exercises and questions about what we have gone over so far. I wanted to practice and reinforce the processes they use in a structured way. It was interesting to see how they responded-they went right at it and almost treated it like a quiz. I was surprised at how challenged they were by it but it led to a lot of discussion and writing. We spent almost the entire class on one handout alone. I don’t usually use handouts (and won’t again for this class) but in this case it worked out.

No Pushma today, but we did have a new student-Luis! I’m not sure what his job is but he is also a worker at Crowne Plaza. He was great to have in class-eager to listen and join in, plus some good questions asked. His english is good so he can help explain more complex ideas to the other students. We just continue to focus and slowly add to what we have already learned. A lot of talk today about general work topics (shifts, overtime, etc) and past tense practice. We do a little on irregular verbs each class as that is something they have shown a desire to work on.

Today we had Pushma and Marta, with Veronice assisting. It was a good chance for the students to work on what we’ve been covering. We spent a lot of time in the laundry room talking about the jobs they perform and practicing the vocab and processes. A lot of emphasis on pronunciation and getting the students to use complete sentences when describing what they do. It was great having Verenice to add different perspective (and energy!) to the class.

Last class:( The usual group showed up and we did a lot more writing than I thought we would. We did a bit of review, then we did a scavenger hunt for general objects I had described and written down. For example, find something shiny, soft, etc. I was a little surprised at how difficult it was for 3 of the students but they worked together to figure it out. A lot of discussion at the end of class as to if there would be more classes happening. I’ll talk with Patrik about this later-they seem to want more.
