What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) Last day of the session! Instructor a little out of sorts due to sickness but class energy was inspiring. We did a lot of review on the things that we have been focusing on the last 4 weeks, especially pronunciation. The class has a good grasp of vocab and processes. I tried ‘pictionary’ using vocabulary words (and other random words thrown in) with the intent of having the students act out the words. It turned into the students merely saying the words because that alone was difficult enough. I had the two students who really wanted the writing practice stay at the board and all the others would yell out words. Surprisingly engaging and useful, especially for this group.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) We focused a lot today on pronunciation and review of topics we’ve been talking about the last few weeks- vocabulary words, past tense, and a bit of written review centered around processes used everyday. These last two classes will be heavy on pronunciation, with students speaking for the vast majority of the class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) Today we did 2 activities. First activity was brainstorming (in two groups) everything they do at work, including menial tasks and job duties. Came up with 21 total. I gave them a few minutes to think and talk it over, then went back and forth to have them announce what they came up with. I liked how the students each came up with activities, and then had to communicate to me what they did so I could understand it. It was difficult for a couple students but we, as a class, figured out what they were saying. I thought it was one of the more cooperative activities we’ve done so far. They really enjoy talking about what they do. The other activity was a modified version of Pictionary. The students aren’t shy at all about coming up in front of the class and taking chances. Two students in particular (one from each language group) are emerging as de facto leaders, and while it’s rare, they can translate the more difficult concepts if I ask. They seem to be gaining confidence with their English skills-very nice to watch that develop.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) I had an icebreaker activity that centered around small talk that I thought would go further than it did, but unfortunately it kind of sputtered. Not terrible, just not great. I went to an activity that I brought just in case that actually saved the day. It was a question and answer sheet (which I rarely do) that reviewed everything we talked about so far. The activity took nearly the rest of the class- there was a lot of discussion around what different people do in their jobs, what the names of equipment and ingredients were that are commonly used, and lots of pronunciation questions. The activity sparked lots of conversation, and the students helped each other as they always do.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) We are really hitting our groove, I believe. We did a lot of work around pronunciation and vocab and also practiced dialog using examples the students provided. They are very animated when talking about work and all the things that can go wrong, and I was surprised at how they were able to give good examples of problems (since I’m not familiar with problems they experience everyday). There is plenty to be done in working on pronunciation, but today we came up with a good amount of issues we can practice with in future classes.

Total Score: 51What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) I had very specific ideas about what I wanted to do entering the class but veered off into 2 areas that the class wanted to explore- past tense and vocab. For past tense, I wrote a verb on the board and had 2 students from each team come up and attempt to put the correct past tense down. It was much more difficult than I thought it would be but they really got into it because they all seemed to have a different idea of what some answers were. They worked together to figure it out so in the end it was a lot of fun. I also did what I thought would be a basic unscramble exercise (again in teams) of vocab words we worked on last week, and again it was a bit more difficult than I imagined but they tried hard and we had a good time with it. Pronunciation was stressed in both exercises.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) Today we dove right in to work related topics. Started with an offshoot of pre-class conversation about overtime and work schedule. Students enjoy talking about their jobs and what they do. For vocabulary I had them separate into 2 groups (no language or line separation-just random) and had them brainstorm words they use everyday. It wasn’t what I was expecting- there was very little about the product and more about the equipment they use. I incorporated the alphabet into this activity mostly because the class started in a conversational style that went in its own direction. Also, the class was very animated when it came to trying to tell me what they were saying and demonstrating when I didn’t understand. It was an activity that just came about, so things flowed nicely there. The 2 students who seem to be on the shy side are about the same so I will do some sort of activity where they are more engaged-they will definitely join in when engaged so I’ll do a better job of working on this. Also, pronunciation seems to be the main topic of interest to them, so we’ll work on that quite a bit in the future.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific) First day at Bridgetown! We got to know each other, including general personal information and general job duties. Not all students knew each other so we spent quite a bit of time here-it also gave me the chance to get an idea of each person’s ability and shyness level. One student is a supervisor so her English is a little more advanced than the others, although she needs work with pronunciation (a goal she stated). We did a pair activity which was basically a question and answer then report to class. The students definitely help each other when they are at a loss (S’s are Spanish and Vietnamese speaking, but there is no real division between groups when it comes to helping out). We talked some about work, and in the process the students explained to me the basics of what they do. I would say 10 students were very active and 2 were on the shy side, but they spoke when asked questions with no problem. Cohesive group!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We went off on a tangent about simple present tense continuous, which led to a lot of writing and practicing-I am working, I am cleaning, etc. We also finished our verb game. Considering how much writing they did they were engaged throughout. Their writing level is about the same but their speech and sentence structure seems to be improving little by little. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): (This post is for Thursday-previous post marked Thursday is actually Wednesday, 4/16) New student Marcelina joined us. We had a ‘test’ about what we went over previously. Also played a game where we practiced and demonstrated verbs. Totally fun, and I feel like they will remember a good amount of what we learned. Marcelina is a little more advanced than the other students so was able to join in just fine. However, the verb game was challenging for her and the other students, and Marcelina wanted to continue to play it next week, which we will if we have time.Date of Class: 4/17/2014

Today we taped the students reading a short work-related script which, unfortunately, I was unable to play back for them-computer issue. I will try again Thursday. It was good practice nonetheless. We have also done a lot of past tense practice. Today we looked at images and talked about what action took place previously to lead to the image. Lastly, played hangman with previous vocabulary.
