We had a small group of returning learners for the first day of the new term at this site. This allowed us to give focused feedback, and more importantly, allowed the learners to easily and often work together. The MC tried a new activity this week! We viewed a photo related to the lesson and talked in small groups about what we saw, what we thought was happening, and how we felt about it. Although at times the learners seemed a little confused about the directions, the activity provided lots of opportunities for learners to bring in vocabulary they already knew and create their own meaning.
Another highlight from today’s class was timing ourselves as we recited the sentences from the dictation exercise around the circle. This was a great way to practice fluency as well as recalling important phrases under pressure. Plus we consistently improved our times!
Overall I took a lot away from today’s lesson and so did the learners!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners arrived late but all within the time of ‘alphabet sheet’ so we had a good practice of alphabet sheet before diving into the main part of the lesson. Overall the class went at a good pace and there was a good flow of energy. The dictation sentences weren’t too difficult either. There were enough engagement among the learners in doing the dictation sentences and the song.

Today was Paul’s dress rehearsal and he did great! His timing was on-point and he was very poised. We kicked off the lesson with a dictation/choral progression + round robin, asking learners to share if they have been pulled over or gotten a speeding ticket. Next, we did a document search with an ACLU handout entitled “Know Your Rights” for common phrases related to this topic. We finished by writing out questions that a police officer may ask when s/he pulls you over and common responses, then practiced saying them around the circle.February 14, 2018 at 8:00 pm #9741Paul LaFeminaSpectatorLesson Title: Down the drain

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Paul started with a short dictation explaining DACA and then lead a TPR. The TPR got people moving an d definitely added energy to the class. We did some “this is an apple” with DACA applications, and a little more dictation and then document search. A really good variety of activities without spending too much time on any one thing. Very fun and fast paced class even though the material was serious.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fun and engaging session on growing produce at home in containers. This seemed to be a novel idea to the learners. We discussed this as well as the legal status of Oregonians growing marijuana in their homes. Jessica drew plants that are easy to go on a whiteboard and the group tried to guess what they were. One particularly lovely drawing came to be known as the “stupid melon.” Ha! Jessica brought small containers, potting soil, and a large clove of garlic. She dictated directions and the group planted their garlic and took it home with them. Finally, we looked at Facebook posts of a former class teacher who is now teaching English in the home country of one of the students. Fun class.
