We have a returning learner! She came a long time ago and has decided to join us again.. I hope she sticks around!
After the title of one of my favorite expressions in English, we focused on the topic of describing people. We started with looking at images of people that I took from the Humans of New York book- it’s the perfect book for this topic! Such good images and so many different walks of life. We described the people in the pictures and ourselves and they learned how to talk about age (She’s in her late 30), we kept it pretty simple with describing our physical appearances and we will delve into describing personality next week.October 24, 2018 at 2:08 pm #10576Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):What happened: The first learner came about 15 minutes late, and the 2nd about 25. When learner 1 came in, she was trying to tell me why she wasn’t here last week but as she kept using the present or present progressive instead of past, I decided to do an LEA type activity with her. While we were doing this, the 2nd learner came in and joined. I kept it short but it was great practice for both of them. We didn’t have much time left but we started by describing a woman in a magazine photo and discussed her general physical appearance as well as her clothes. I’m realizing I need to better figure out how to best describe skin tones- it’s complicated! Will work on that for next week :)

The new(returning) learner came back which is nice since she’s a bit more advanced than the group and we ‘lost’ 2 of the most advanced to retirement. So it’s a nice balance and seems like she’ll be here to stay :)
We reviewed a bit from last week on the topic of describing people by looking at images of people from the Humans of New York book. We described the people in the pictures- a bit more in depth this week- and then the group described eachothers physical appearances’. We discussed the topic of voting briefly- I was trying to figure out if they all plan to vote, but without asking if they can legally do so. It was tricky but ultimately it seems like most of them can vote but they usually don’t because they d0n’t really understand how to. Therefore we are definitely going to work with this topic next week, and they all agreed it would be helpful to better understand the measures and why this election is so important. I’m definitely looking forward to this and hope they will all walk away with confidence to get out there and vote!October 31, 2018 at 11:55 pm #10602Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):What happened: The focus today was on voting. We learned a bit about the measures on the ballot and the importance of this election. We talked about the the difference between refugee/immigrant/asylum seeker and also about the migrant children crisis currently happening. Looking back, class as a whole may have been bit complex for these learners. It’s not easy content to work with but I think/hope they left feeling like they learned even just a few new vocabulary words, if not more ;)

Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):What happened: Similar to group 1, the focus today was on voting. However, as one of the staff members came in and gave us all candy, I couldn’t resist spending at least a few minutes on Halloween. So we did that and then explored vocabulary related to voting with a quick ‘This is an apple’ style activity. We then talked a bit about the measures on the ballot and the importance of this election. We talked about the the difference between refugee/immigrant/asylum seeker and, also about the migrant children crisis currently happening. This group is generally more advanced than group 1, and it seemed as though they took great interest in learning more about the measures on the ballot. I hope that those who can were inspired and confident enough to cast their votes!

The next few weeks will focus on ‘Historic Events’ such as; The Titanic, Same-sex marriage, the Chernobyl Disaster, and maybe one more. Today, we started with the Titanic and did a few activities related to this topic. We also did the Transportation Survey for the PSU partnership.November 7, 2018 at 5:39 pm #10613Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

We have another new learner, so if she keeps coming, we are back to 6! We started off with the survey- but I first started with some short dialogue practice to prep them. Questions like ‘How did you get to work today’ and ‘Have you ever taken a Lyft?’ We then completed the survey as a group. With about 20 minutes left, we talked a bit about the first in the Historic Event series, the Titanic.November 14, 2018 at 2:26 pm #10630Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

Fun class talking about our plans for Thanksgiving, what we’re making, etc.. I brought in images with common Turkey Day dishes and we wrote the names down of them. We talked about what making ‘from scratch’ means and also learned a recipe from P- how to make Vietnamese Fried Chicken wings. yummmy! I gave them a recipe of my mom’s famous ham/cheese sandwiches, we used it to practice talking about ingredients and directions and they are very excited to make them!- This reply was modified 5 years, 5 months ago by Brooke Stady.

Smaller class today, but a good one! Similar to group 1, we talked about our plans for Thanksgiving, what we’re making, etc.. we used the images with common Turkey Day dishes in a couple different ways, and one learner said she really wants to try many of the dishes as she’s only had Turkey but not stuffing, green bean casserole, etc.. We worked with the recipe of my mom’s famous ham/cheese sandwiches, and ended with a thanksgiving themed word search.November 28, 2018 at 8:50 pm #10665Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

Just 1 learner today- we completed the complex survey, but weren’t able to do it on our phones as there is no wifi and the reception in the building just isn’t that great. We did what we could! With the time remaining, we worked with a wordcloud related to the holidays, then wrote down some sentences about the different celebrations happening this month; mainly Christmas, Kwaanza and Channakau.November 28, 2018 at 8:53 pm #10666Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

Only 2 learners today! We’re really down to a core group of 4 now that the two retired. One of the 4 is on vacation, and I learned that the other doesn’t like to drive in the dark. I’m not sure if that means we won’t see her until spring, but I hope not! Either way, we also completed the complex survey, via pdf format. With the time remaining, similar to group 1, we worked with a wordcloud related to the holidays, wrote down some sentences about the different celebrations happening this month and then practiced the grammar point lend versus borrow using images of winter clothing. Energy was a little low in the beginning of class but the last activity was a good one to end with :)December 6, 2018 at 8:03 am #10686Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

We jumped right into the theme of the day; the Thai Cave Rescue. I had intended to do 4 weeks in a row of this module but then broke it up with some holiday stuff. We started with 1 learner, but the 2nd came in shortly after we began with a listening/cloze activity. We talked a bit about caves and the rescue in general- 1 learner knew about the story, the other did not. After that we had fun with a ‘Speaking card game’ that I discovered a while back which is just basically discussion starter type questions. They loved it!
J, the learner that almost always comes to class, told me today that she would be moving to 2nd shift in January which means she’ll go to the group 2 class. I’ll talk to Heather about group 1, because without J there, there might be some days with 0 learners, or just 1.December 6, 2018 at 8:07 am #10687Brooke StadySpectatorLesson Title:

I noticed last week that the 2 ladies could use some focused pronunciation practice so we started today with an activity focusing on the ch/sh sounds. It proved to be quite useful and fun for them. We then learned about the Thai Cave Rescue and also talked a bit about caves. All learners knew about the story, and one knew a lot about the cave mentioned in the story as she is from Thailand. We ended with the card game and everyone got lots of good conversation practice in! Fun class :)
