Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 5

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 2 learners today but it was actually really good for them to get some more focused attention as they are the lowest of the group. They were both pretty chatty so we did have a bit of casual conversation to start off which was great! I let them talk without error correction for a bit and then started to add it in as we went on. We talked about Thanksgiving and Black Friday and did a listening/cloze activity about the history of BF. They loved learning about that :) For the last portion of class, we practiced language around Religion. I have been wanting to explore this topic with this group for quite some time now and I’m glad I finally got to it- I’m learning, too! We didn’t get too far, just did a dictation to start off/introduce the topic and then we learned the names of the 5 most widely practiced Religions of the world. They were very open to sharing their religious view, which I figured would be the case, their culture is pretty open, much more than ours. Looking forward to delving further in next week with the rest of the group too.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Unfortunately no learners came to class. I’m not too worried given the time of year…also the company is very short staffed right now, which means many employees are working over time and therefore may not have the English class (before their shift) at the top if their list. We’ll see what happens next week and then after that we have a few weeks off for the holidays.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I think this was the first time ever that only 1 learner came to this session (usually there are at least 2). Alas, it was great practice for her! Two of the other ‘regulars’ were working overtime and one was on vacation. The other doesn’t come during the winter months as she doesn’t like to drive in the dark. Regardless, the learner that did come is one of the lower levels of the bunch but loves to talk so that’s what she did pretty much the whole hour and a half (with some structured guidance of course ;) and I think she loved all the attention so I’m cool with that :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We continued with the World Religions topic. First reviewed a bit and then worked with some new material delving deeper into the differences of the main religions. So fascinating! We ended with a holiday themed memory game which was a fun way to end the class and then fall term! We will return on 1/15.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner but he hadn’t been to the last few classes so I was happy to have him back! He was happy to be back too- he said he couldn’t come to class the last few weeks because he was working so much overtime -which has been the case for many learners lately :(
We talked about our holidays and then he needed help filling out a survey so we did that for the majority of our time together.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a good class back after a few weeks off! Just 2 learners but lots of good practice. After helping them with a short survey they needed to take for work, we delved into a new topic; Fears & Phobias. We used dictation as an intro and then brainstormed the most common fears people have. We then used images to explore those and talked about what we are afraid of. We’ll continue this topic next week :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Energy was a bit low today but I did my best to keep the ladies engaged and energized. We reviewed a bit from last class, talked about some common fears and then shared things we are afraid of. We did a memory/minds eye activity and then practiced a short dialogue about a specific phobia called a hypnophobia (the fear of sleep! Glad I don’t have that fear! ;) Lastly we looked a document with the names of several different (some odd) phobias and learned what they mean. That’s a wrap!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I was a bit thrown off when I learned the male learner who had been coming to the 1st session switched his shift at work so he came to this (2nd) session instead. He is pretty used to one on one conversation and this group is quite different in that sense; we always have at least 3 learners so it’s a lot more group focused. So, I was a little flustered and at first it was definitely tricky to manage… he is at a pretty low level, the ladies are used to an all women group, and the content was a bit challenging for all. It wasn’t a failure but not the best class either. We first did some ice breakers (introductions/name spelling and a little ‘what do you do’ dialogue) which I’m glad I did as I feel like it helped the group dynamic a bit. We did a few activities to explore language related to radon but I think it was just too complex and they had never heard of it. I tried to keep the content simple and engaging but I guess just didn’t plan very well. We learned names of household items, or things in the home, that might be dangerous (humidifier, extension cords, lead paint, etc..) and ended with ‘This is an apple’ which I think was a good choice as it almost always brings laughter- and it did. I will plan for a more mixed group next week :)
