Lesson Title: But What’s Our History?
Date of Class: 3/19/2018
Day of Class: Monday
Time of Class: 2:00pm
MC: Cecilia
DJ: Sara
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner: N/A
Module: DACA – Immigration
How Many Learners: 10
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): About 3 blank loyalty cards left (in the box). Lots of alphabet sheets, medium number of self evaluation forms, and starting to get low on attendance sheets.Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 6
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 4
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 4
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 7
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7Total Score: 33
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today Cecilia completed her gentle intervention and did a great job! Along with dictation of some relevant vocabulary, we spent time with the document “A Brief Timeline of U.S. Policy on Immigration and Naturalization”. First, learners found words and phrases followed by choral response. Next, we found specific years then had various students read the associated sentences aloud. We finished the day with a video about deportation policy.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Started with listen and point with the alphabet, Lucas had me say a few strands so the students can hear the difference in how people speak, I thought that was a good idea. Then we did yell and spell. Followed with the dictation progression and then we did a word search. From there we did some more dictation progression and then we passed a banana around and had the class model down. We did not have time to show a video. Lucas is good at having the students work together instead of relying on the teachers. This class also had multiple languages so it was good to see everyone helping each other across languages. It was the epitome of intercultural work, overall a really good class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Alphabet listen and point, yell and spell name, dictation progression, and then document search. Ben had me call out a few words for the class to find, he was good at including the DJ in the lesson. Then we continued on with dictation progression. This class seemed more shy than usual and was not participating in the choral response as well as we would have liked. Ben then had each student say the sentence and it worked really well. I intend on using that in some of my lesson plans in the future. Overall the class went very well, Ben thought he could have been more prepared but nevertheless it seemed to work out well.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a group of 9, with 2 new learners (unfortunately, one left before I could make a card for him). We did a dictation progression with an Einstein quote, ending the exercise with each person reading it aloud individually. Then was vocabulary dictation for words related to mass shootings. These words were next included in a document word-search and dictation progression about gun violence and safety. Class ended with a brief video clip about kids organizing politically to prevent future gun violence.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We welcomed back a learner who was in her home country for 4 months. It was so nice to see her and the other learners were giving her hugs. I dictated short sentences about the connection between what we fuel our bodies with can help prevent diseases. I passed out a photocopy of a plate with fork and knife divides into sections. Learners guessed where each food I called out belonged and we wrote the food on our plates where it belonged–the PROTEIN section, the WHOLE GRAINS section or the FRUITS & VEGETABLES section. They were tripped up a few times, but enjoyed yelling out their thoughts. We asked each other if we liked this food or that food in RR, found terms on the TOP 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2015-2020 DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS sheet I handed out, then played “perfect plate bingo!” helpful, communicative class with two newcomers (one to me and one for everyone).

January 16, 2018 at 5:15 pm There were several students in the class that I didn’t know, but apparently they had gone to classes on other days. A Chinese woman was there for the very first time. May prepared a good lesson about organic foods. She had them find words for vocabulary on a handout. She also had them match the names of fruits with pictures. Finally. she did a dictation using organic foods. A lot was new to the students so it took them some time to do the exercises.March 21, 2018 at 5:45 pm #9850Herbert GereggSpectatorLesson Title: Local Food

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a tough day. running late from another appointment, and another class at IRCO to cover, basically, my world fell apart this day for about 3 weeks. Brian was here, forgot he was coming. Brought food, and had to rely on the day before my birthday to excuse myself from poor showing. Still, class was fun, took pictures, sang different versions of happy birthday in different languages.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was interesting working with Tom Hanks.. the name Hanks was surprisingly difficult. Most people didn’t know him, and the video that I used was.. incomplete and too long. Should have found more clips, that would have worked better. Still, kind of interesting to name off a list of movies. One learner knew a lot of them!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I’m literally giving myself a 1 on reflection because I can’t even remember what this class was about! though I do remember it a little bit – two learners came in late, but I don’t remember what we did.
