Lesson Title: All about DACA
Date of Class: 2/26/2018
Day of Class: Monday
Time of Class: 6:00-7:30
MC: Sara
DJ: Kalin
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner:
Module: Education and Government
How Many Learners: 5
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Need more loyalty cardsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 5
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 4
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 6
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 31
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Alphabet listen and point, we also did a string of 3 or 4 letter combinations. This part was challenging for the students but it was equally engaging. We did dictations, first with single words and then we moved onto full sentences. Next we did a document search, and continued with full sentence dictations. then we did a round robin with an official document, and then we watched a video about DACA. The class was really engaged with one another, we had varying language abilities but Sara did a good job for the preparation and had sentences already written out. We used this for a low level learner it allowed the class to continue on at a smooth pace. The video was a little rushed but it was a good transition to pass out the cards. Overall the class went very smoothly and everyone seemed engaged with the content as well as the instructors.

How Many Learners: 7
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): only 2 blank loyalty cardsSelf Evaluation

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7Total Score: 40
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was one new learner and one on their 2nd visit in a group of 7. They seemed to get the flow of class well and fit in with a group that was otherwise pretty familiar with each other. The difference in proficiency level was stark, but didn’t cause any connection problems that I noticed; they were helping each other in English and Spanish. We did a round-robin, Vision Zero document search, this is…a safety light (and gave everybody a safety light to take home), and dictation progression with walking safety tips.

Date of Class: 2/26/2018
Day of Class: Monday
Time of Class: 2:00pm
MC: Patrik
DJ: Sara
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner: N/A
Module: DACA – Immigration History
How Many Learners: 12
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Running low on loyalty cards. Good on alphabet sheets, self-eval forms, and attendance records. (Thank you to whoever restocked them!)Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 4
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 8
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 8
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7 (-1 point for this blurb being late) = 6Total Score: 37
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Our group was mostly “regulars” plus one newcomer who was relatively low-proficiency. It was remarkable to see how the learners seated around him rose to the occasion and provided support throughout the class.
Patrik led the group through the usual first three activities followed by a document search of the “Percent of People Who Are Foreign Born” map. He did a slight variation on the activity by calling out state names even though they were not explicitly written. The learners seemed to enjoy the task and it was interesting to see which they knew: for example, several learners mixed up Arizona and Texas. We then did a round of dictation related to the document which gave learners an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the map. We concluded class with a document search of the poem “The New Colossus”, followed by a choral response reading of it bit-by-bit.
A notable moment: towards the end of class while we transitioned between activities, learners broke out into several side conversations. I got to see first-hand a “low engagement, high connection” moment!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I dictated sentences about Portland’s community gardens that were varied in length and difficulty with several repeating words and phrases. During the RR, I asked the learners about their own gardens. They really loved talking about their gardens and I was surprised at the ones who said ”Yes, I enjoy gardening!” We played gardening bingo and a few of them giggled when I said “WEED!” as one of the bingo words. Oh humans!….what’re ya’ gonna do!? :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today, learners were a lot, so we could go slow in class. Some learners were slow to do dictation but Herbert could handle it very well. Moreover, Julia also helped a lot. In addition, the lesson also made them engaged and they enjoyed to talk to each other about the direction.March 5, 2018 at 5:09 pm #9792Cecilia SmithSpectatorCopy the text below and paste into a comment, then fill it out! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started the lesson with the standard listen and point, yelling and spelling or names, and the title of the day’s lesson. We then dictated some key words that we would use in the lesson; Sara built on last week’s lesson by continuing to use “Colossus” and using it as listen and point material, which we then read aloud together, line by line. We did a round robin for the Statue of Liberty, and then wrote down some facts about immigration to the United States from a video Sara had prepared. This culminated the lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a large group of learners with one new student. The students really connected with one another and helped each other along with the tasks that were given to them. We did a round robin, “This is the Statue of Liberty…..” and then dictated immigration fact history. There was dictation of simple vocabulary words which helped students with the next task in forming sentences. Students struggled with the difficulty of the sentences, but Sara was able to adjust them without taking away from the facts.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We dictated sentences having to do with physical activity to stay well and to ward off diseases. During the round robin, we asked each other what we enjoyed doing for physical activity. There were many different responses including yoga, swimming and in-line skating (guess who? ;) ). We then acted out several different types of exercise including rowing, bowling and Frisbee throwing. I held up signs with those activities written on them to see if learners could recognize the words and mime the activity. It was funny to see who was looking to whom to give it a try. Very chatty lively class! Brian was a great shadower and gave meaningful and indiscriminate help.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today we had the usual number of learners with a few new faces mixed in. As always with this group, learners were excellent about helping one another and often got into side conversations related to the content.
Cecilia showed a cool video that featured maps of the United States changing across time to reflect the different countries of origin of immigrants in each state. We dictated three sentences from the video (along with choral progressions of each) followed by a re-watching of the clip.
We finished class with a brief dialogue asking if we have ever travelled to other places. Overall a good class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I dictated a few short sentences, then had them write down a bunch of items one would find in a first aid kit. We passed around each item after the word was written so that they could see what it was and get another chance to practice their reading/pronunciation. I deliberately used alternating plural and singular nouns so they could practice that as well–ie. THIS ointment and THESE bandageS. Didn’t get through the entire list as there were a small handful of low level learners, but they seemed to enjoy passing around the items. After I put the items back inside the kit, I showed them the complete FAK and we practiced saying it. Very chatty class with everyone helping each other as usual! :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class wasn’t as big as most classes. May was quite organized. There was an old Hispanic man that recently started to attend. He slowed down the group writing process, but May adapted and the class moved also okay. First, she pointed out some words from a written page about farmers markets. Then from another page, she had the class find names of vegetables and fruits that were matched with pictures.
