What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I dictated sentences having to do with bones in the skeleton to piggyback on Amy’s lesson about doctor’s appointments and broken bones. Learners seemed amazed about our bones fusing together and having fewer bones in our bodies as we reach adulthood. They looked things up on their phones and showed each other what they found. We passed around my wooden human body and showed each other specific bones in our Round Robin such as patella and clavicle. We played “Bodacious Beautiful Body Bingo” at the end of class and ate banana bread I brought in for everyone regardless of who won the bingo game. I am amazed and so proud of a few of the learners whose English mastery has grown in leaps and bounds since we first met. :)

There was a new learner in class from Russian. Moreover, the lesson was little difficult but learners liked it because they could learn new vocabulary. The lesson also explained some scientific way about rain. In the end of class, we gave time to review vocabulary that they learned that day.

    Total Score: 31

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

We watched a video from the ACLU that revisted concepts introduced in the previous week’s class. (Since we have a high number of “regulars”, this was a nice way to get many of the learners thinking about this topic once again.) Next we dove into the dictation of some important phrases related to the topic (e.g. sanctuary city, federal authorities). This was followed by a Dictation + Round Robin activity discussing what a sanctuary city is and ways in which these cities try to protect undocumented immigrants.

One of the highlights of this class (and this group in general so far) is their shared sense of connection. For example, one learner brought in a stack of cards to pass out to classmates listing resources for filing their taxes. Also, we had a learner-turned-shadower helping us out! She did a great job and we appreciated her input in the after class debrief about possible future module topics that she felt were relevant to this group.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): More learners came in as the lesson went on. We started with the Alphabet Listen and Point, then Yell and Spell Names, and the title of the day’s lesson. We did a round robin demonstrating an administrative warrant as well as a judicial warrant, then went over a dialogue for how to deal with both. Sara performed the dialogue with each learner. This finished the lesson.

New student from Congo attended – Sawini speaker. Spanish students near her were very helpful and coached her through the exercises. Alexis proved herself to be a gifted shadower.
