Lesson Title: It is polite not to write in ALL “Caps for Sale” copies.

    MC: Patrik
    DJ: Santiago

Wew baby, was it hot outside ! The MAX trains did not seem to like this and were running well behind schedule. Patrik and I were both taking MAX to Rockwood and texting each other as we went. I was changing colours of MAX at Gateway. We ended up on the same train, but in different cars. We discovered this through text. After a few stops, I changed to the car Patrik was in. Patrik had their bike but, to my horror, no helmet. Patrik rode fast from the SE 181st Ave MAX Station to the library, and I walked fast. Patrik arrived at the meeting room around 1:58 pm and I arrived at 2:03 pm.

Before I arrived, one of the learners had told Patrik they should wear a hat. Patrik thought they meant wear a helmet, because bicycling without a helmet has the potential to put a strain on all of society, but they meant a hat for the sun. (Did I mention it was a hot day?) We spent the whole class doing dictations about hats, helmets, my hat, and the Jewish Rabbis. Then we had a great conversation about the three Abrahamic traditions (and some non-Abrahamic traditions), and a learner said that all people of the world are one people, which I thought might have been an expression of abrogationism, but Patrik thought was really cool. At some point, the clock struck 3:30, and we stopped Englishing.

I asked Patrik if they had facilitated 999 P*P*T English sessions less prepared than this. They said yes emphatically. I remain less than credulous, though it also remains not my my place to question the self-evaluation of an MC. Factors that contribute to the low preparation score include arriving less than 4 minutes before the session began and having no lesson plan whatsoever in their head until we began an making it up as we went along.

This is Santi writing. Patrik arrived around 1:45, after Jesse and I. Patrik busy talking on the phone, and I was not able to introduce Jesse, which significantly stressed-me-out.

We did the alphabet and names. I don’t remember how, but there was a first time learner, who had arrived over two hours late for the class the day before, while Patrik and I were reflecting, so Patrik and I were really excited to see them back this day. In light of the first-time learner (who is also an early beginer in English), I think we did the alphabet and names fairly conventionally, but as I said, I don’t remember. Then we did dictaiton with the calling of the lesson, and whole-part-whole on that. Did dictation of “Do you use facebook?”,”Yes, I do.”, and “No, I don’t.” Then Patrik did a spontaneous dialogue with me about my facebook use and did I see the what Patrik had posted yesterday. The learners wrote down the dialogue (which had at least a dozen exchanges) and we did whole-part-whole on that. Patrik was really excited with my response to Some time later, the clock struck 3:30, and we said our goodbyes and thank yous. I don’t remember if anything else happened in between the dialogue about my facebook use and the end. That’s the story of this day in English history.

She did a good job in her silent class. Learners could understand her even though she did not speak. Learners helped each other and engaged very well.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did an alphabet listen-and-point that included a couple short breaks for extra practice on pronouncing letters that were throwing some people off. During the names activity, it became clear that two learners were new, as the format seemed confusing for them. We did some dictations about the labor movement, during which one learner did not participate for the writing portion. Qrysi then grabbed the deck of professions for This is a/an _. It got lively with multiple cards being passed around at the same time. Class ended with a document search with info about Worksource Portland Metro.

I arrived 4 minutes late. Thitichaya and Sasha were there doing alphabet listen and point. Thitichaya did five letter combos. Then we did yell and spell first and last names. It was great !

Thitichaya and Sasha both brought great energy to all the activities, and Sasha brought thespian skills to saying phrases in English. Thitichaya brought amazing colour photographs for “This is an Apple” and color printouts for two different document searches. Thitichaya put really fun interesting twists on “This is an Apple” and “Listen and Do”. Thitichaya gave the photographs to different people every time, and they could pick which direction to pass the the “This is an Apple” around the table.

We ended with a game where Sasha and I had to do the “do”‘s from the “listen and do, and we each had a teammate who was a learner, and we were racing to have the learner teammate say the outdoor activity that Sasha and I were doing charades for. It was like a Password TV gameshow race, and it was super fun.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Cecilia’s 2nd silent class. I think we got through the class, several late arrivals and a brand new very late arrival with no speaking on the MC’s part whatsoever. Tried a new activity – fill in the blank- and between the non-speaking MC and it being, well, new, it wasn’t super smooth. But we got over the hurdle, got everyone on track by dictating sentences and repeating difficult phrases and sentences.

Over the course of alphabet listening and pointing, and spelling our names, 10 more people arrived. Santiago had the learners one-by-one practice pronouncing letters that were posing challenges during the alphabet sheet pointing, highlighting and emphasizing mouth movements. After the name of the lesson came more dictation; these sentences set the context for This Is An Apple (but it was a union song not an apple) and a quick round-robin dialogue. We ended with the song Union Maid.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There were only four learners, so the class was pretty intimate and communal. C. worked one-on-one with Mr. A with the sentence dictation and that worked out really well to give him the help he needs and keep the momentum of the class going. The sentences all pertained to child labor laws. We learned about each other during the Round Robin where we asked each other if we worked as children (under 18) and what we did for our first job. I didn’t know I.F. was a nurse!!! Learners were very chatty talking about their jobs and were interested in learning about each other. We played games and ate candy. After class chat was productive. We talked about our thought about helping specific learners one-on-one and if that was “special treatment” or a distraction, discussed all the strides certain learners are making with their learning and talked about our feeling on fonts and lower/upper case letters–to correct or let go? Great class!!! Great helper and great shadower who really is invested.

The CM folks seemed to enjoy it, and a few expressed interest in connecting with us again. Passing around the deck of professions worked well. Then.. after that, we went to a Planning & Sustainability Commission Hearing downtown for the Residential Infill Project, and several people came from the class. So quite a good day. This lesson was about the results of the Oregon primary, so we did a round robin with pictures of some of the winners and then dictated sentences about who they are.
