It was a silent class for Ben! Materials chosen for the topic of taxes seemed to be well heard by the learners and Ben kept up good engagement despite his nonverbal status. Group responded well with direction to assist each other. Multiple layers of levels, 3 languages represented and one brand new learner! Liberians on this site seem very supportive of the program

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Of the 7 learners, one was returning for his second class; everyone else has been coming regularly to Tuesday night class. The average level of fluency was lower than usual for this session (a couple more advanced learners that typically show up weren’t there tonight), so Izzy adjusted the exercises accordingly. We passed around items that would be useful in an emergency kit following the “this is a…” model. These items were also some of the words in the word searches using an emergency supply checklist and a Red Cross earthquake fact sheet.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a brand-new learner who came about 10 minutes late and brought her daughter (about 3). She spoke Russian and had a nice time connecting with the other learners and was very friendly. She wanted to know where everyone was from and seemed extra happy to be able to converse in her own language with another learner. I dictated sentences about the initial planning for an emergency such as a volcanic eruption or earthquake. Some learners seemed a little confused about the differences between a First-Aid kit (which we focused on in the last module) and an Emergency Preparedness Kit until we showed them the first-aid kit the library had on hand and what an emergency preparedness kit looked like–one that would have water and food, etc. We asked each other if we had emergency preparedness kits–a few had. *hopefully, I can scrounge around and find items for an E.P.K. to pass around for next week. At least some photos!!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): My papers have vanished – I’m so sorry Sara! We began the class with the usual activities and dictated facts about taxes, which were in a video we watched later. We did a round robin with a tax form and then did a document search with it. We finished up reading an unrelated poem, reciting it word by word, then line by line, then having listeners who volunteered read the whole thing.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
There were not a lot of learners. Thus, the class moved so fast. We finished the lesson early. However, Herbert could find other activities to teach them. We played some games and learners seemed like it. Because there were not a lot learners, it was easy to move slowly and talked to learners one by one.April 9, 2018 at 3:45 pm #9963Sara MullinerSpectatorLesson Title: How Can I Get My Money Back?
Date of Class: 4/9/2018

Time of Class: 2:00pm
MC: Cecilia
DJ: Sara
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner: N/A
Module: Taxes
How Many Learners: 5
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Desperately need more loyalty cards printed and cut out (there are a bunch of DIY ones in the box that may need copied over too). Alphabet and attendance sheets are good, self-eval forms are starting to get low.Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 5

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6Total Score: 32
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a smaller group of learners than usual today. We began with a Listen & Point activity of the document “11 Ways to Save on Your Taxes This Year” in which we searched for 9 relevant phrases. The majority of the rest of class was spent on a dictation + dialogue about how money spent on healthcare can be used as deductions. It was great writing and speaking practice with relevant information contained. We ended class with a TPR (or Listen & Do) of relevant words (e.g. type, sign, groan).

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7
Total Score: 23What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We arrived at 6:18 pm. I wrote the lesson plan 10 minutes before I left home. One learner, with their three children, left as we were handing out alphabet sheets and was not counted in the number of learners. Another learner was frustrated with being with learners of other levels and left around 6:50 pm and was counted in the number of learners. That learner did not want to collaborate with others, and energy improved after they left. One learner who stayed was a return learner who is at Rockwood a lot. The other three learners who stayed were first timers who all spoke the same language (different to the return learner) but did not know the other newbies of their same language. The return learner really carried the class much more than Santi or I, bringing great energy, modeling to newbies, and showing their paper to newbies.
We started with alphabet listen and point, then yell and spell names, then calling the lesson, and dictated Taxes are due April 17th. Then this is an apple with coin denominations 1¢ to 100¢ (Sacagawea dollar) using real coins. Santi brought great energy to this is an apple and throughout the class. The new learners and the return learner who stayed laughed a lot, especially during this is an apple. Did a TPR with finding differnt amounts of money (e.g. $11.25) in the pile of real coins on the table. Finished with a word find on a tax form and more laughing about “amount you owe” and “spouse filing jointly” etc..April 11, 2018 at 8:24 am #9971Izzy ArmentaSpectatorLesson Title: Staying safe during wildfire season

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a great class! We had two new learners with varying skill level. Lucas had to adjust his lesson plan and did a great job. Some of the high-level learners step in and started helping out without even being asked. It was great!

The class ran a little bit slow because there were two learners who could not write fluently. However, other learners helped them al lot. The lesson’s today was attractive, so learners were fun with it. Especially, when we talked about fruit leathers, Brian brought some of them to the class for try. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We welcomed a brand spankin’ new shadower to her very first shadow experience. She was having back difficulties and asked to sit instead of circulating around the room, so I parked her next to a very low level learner so she could give one-on-one help. We had a good time asking each other what social media we use and learners asked lots of questions such as the meaning of isolate and benefit during dictation. We played a very competitive game of LETTER TILES AAAaaand BINGO since one of the learners whose name rhymes with ‘wanna’ begged to play it. Christiane, the shadower, said she had a delightful time with the class and asked what days I’m teaching next week so she could assist me again. I was touched. :)
