What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started about 10 minutes late because the room assigned wasn’t vacated on time. At the start of class, there were the MC, the DJ, one assistant, three shadowers and one student. We started with alpha l&p and a second student came in. Then we moved to yell & spell including all around the room. MC then dictated name of class and then identified the props he’d brought in and asked students to repeat (“this is called a mixing bowl … “, “… a measuring cup…”, etc.) We moved on to variations of dialogue “this is a…” going all around the room. Then we moved on to some dictation. The last two students came in at this point. We continued with dictated sentences about measurements, then moved on to a document search of a chocolate chip cookie recipe returned to alpha l&p. Closed with another short dictation and the long-awaited and delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies. Fin.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started just a few minutes after noon as we settled in and learners were arriving. At first there were only 3, and by the end there were 8! It was a typical multi-level, multi-lingual class. We started with alphabet and yell and spell then filled out loyalty cards. Next was “The title of todays lesson..”. This was pretty difficult for most, as literacy levels were pretty low for many of the learners. And although some learners understood the meaning, it took a while, along with the use of their L1, to get there. Thankfully, there was a lot of assistance for the lower levels between the MC, DJ, assistant and 2 very helpful learners in the class. Lots of team work! We then did some work with ordinals and addresses which proved to be great practice for all, especially with the ordinals. We did a listen/find with one of the handouts on wildlife that was sent by Ivy, and ended with a TPR activity. All in all, a great first class back! We learned a lot about the group, had a quick but thoughtful after class reflection, and came up with a good plan for the next class!

Class began around 12:08 pm. After Alphabet Listen & Point then Yell & Spell, Joshua handed out maps of the U.S., one side having the state names, with state abbreviations on the other side. Learners pointed to states & we had dictation then round robin about states on the West Coast. Dictation of a dialog on their favorite state was followed by another round robin. Dictation of the chorus of the song “This Land Is Your Land” followed, with Jane and Joshua leading the learners in singing it. Class ended on time at 2 pm.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time with the DJ because the MC was stuck on the train. Only 2 students to start and we launched into alpha l&p. 3 other students joined and we continued with yell & spell. MC arrived and we finished up Y&S and he took over. 1 more student arrived. MC moved into dictation with the name of the lesson, then repeating the dictated phrase. Then moved into phone features – brought in a phone box with features listed on it and passed it around class. Dictated some features (e.g., volume, speaker, earpiece…) and practiced speaking those words. Then moved into texting abbreviations (e.g., xoxo, OMG, BRB, thx…) and their meanings – dictated them, students wrote them and then practiced saying them.
Students helped each other with some initial prodding. There was laughter and engagement and a sort of surprising and fun bond between 2 students. Students really enjoyed the texting abbreviations – really thought they were fun. But only 2 of the students actually text so had to sort of illustrate what texting is and why we use abbreviations for it – nice interaction!
Last student arrived at 7:15pm in time to work on part of abbreviation dictation.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was very engaged today, which is especially great since half of the class were first-timers. There was lots of banter, questions, Ss helping each other, as well as (or because of?) a lot of speaking and pronunciation practice. Mark brought a handful of tools from the kitchen which were practiced in a dialogue (‘This is a ____’), dictation, and then using those tools to perfectly and easily transition into TPR of actions surrounding said tools. Class ended with a recipe document search. More than one student was surprised, if not seemingly disappointed, when the class ended- that’s gotta be a sign of an interesting class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a diverse class with many different language groups and English levels represented. At times it made dialogues more difficult because coaching individuals through the simple dialogues sometimes took awhile. There was plenty of laughter between folks as they dialogued though. We did the standard warm up activities, practiced ordinals, made some dialogues, and worked with listen & point on a map of the local area. The class went well despite my cold and Brooke having an injured back. It made keeping a high energy level a bit challenging, however, we were lucky that the class members arrived with a relatively high energy level to begin with.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class went really well. Jane came very well prepared. The two of us had a great balance and ability to communicate as a team. The class environment was productive throughout. We had varied levels in the classroom. Arien was a fantastic assistant. If he decides to stick around, he will undoubtedly be an asset to PPT. One learner in particular struggled with fear of speaking but we all tried our best to make her feel comfortable. After the usual rounds of warm ups, we did a listen and point game with the maps of the US states and abbreviations. This activity is great for helping learners know the names and pronunciation of states, their geographic location on a map, as well as become familiar with their abbreviations. We also did some dialogues. It was a great class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started with only 2 students but within 30 minutes we had our full complement of 6. Started with alpha L&P, then moved on to Y&S. Spent most of the class doing dictation with “the title of this lesson is…” and then a couple of brief paragraphs about the differences between smartphone and basic (flip) phone functionality. There was lots of opportunity to practice choral response with the material. Then moved on to dictating text abbreviations like B4N and ISO and their meanings, with more chances to practice reading and speaking. There was lots of helping and laughter. Even though dictation can sometimes be very tiring, this group powered through it! There was a nice even energy throughout the class and it seemed as though folks left feeling pretty energized. Nice class!

Mark brought a lot of tools related to kitchen and we practiced using those tools, it was a great real world materials. I have a suggestion, so at the of each class that I have been attending, some students especially new ones constantly ask “when is gonna be the next class?” although I understand that most of them are aware of when the next class will be because the library tell them or word of mouth, I still think that we should make cards where it’s written when the next class will be, at what location and at what time.

This class began at 12:07 pm due to several learners arriving after noon simultaneously. We had 3 new learners, but one was new just to the Rockwood Library site. Joshua used this class to fulfill the requirement of teaching without a lesson plan. The activities were quite varied: Alphabet Listen & Point, yell & Spell, dictation, round robin, listen & Point to state names on a map, state name word scramble, & Direction Listen & Do. There was strong camaraderie in the class & the learners worked together to help each other. This class ended on time.
