After alphabet & names we explored Oregon wildflowers through a series of exercises: coloring deserts, mountains, and ocean on a map of Oregon; Coloring and writing wildflower names; Round Robin about wildflower you have seen; and a spelling game using scrabble tiles. Half the class showed up almost 30 minutes late! But it turned out they had come all the way from Lake Oswego. Maureen did a great job of integrating them into the class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Yeah so, Ramin didn’t gave me Alex contact information so I couldn’t call Alex and introduce myself and talk about the lesson before the class so that was a bit disorganized. When I got there I started with the Alphabet sheet and Alex started dictation. To me the way of teaching was pretty fast. We should have slow down a little bit but I feel that it was because we had a lot of materials which it was good to have lots of materials but we can go to everything in just an hour and a half. But at the end people left very happy and that’s very important. I haven’t seen that many people at Rockwood in a while.

Luckily, only a few minutes past 2pm we started. We had a few fairly new faces. The class was on farmers markets. Some items were passed around, which the students identified to each other, we discussed questions/words one might use at a farmer’s market/information desk. Omar, our new learner who is so recently arrived in America seems to have opened up quite a lot in the last few days since his class and I can already see a change in him, which is amazing!

We dictated sentences about Portland’s homeless population including information regarding the Street Roots newspaper. We passed around a xeroxed copy of the front of a Street Roots newspaper. Learners did a Seek and Find with a word cloud Alex photocopied based on homelessness and words surrounding the homeless crisis. Alex played a song “Brother Can you Spare a Dime” by George Michael before and after students were given the lyrics to follow.

This was Alex’s second silent class. He conducted the entire alphabet point using sign language which the learners responded to very well and with interest. Alex signed his name to start off the Yell and Spell and I took over the rest of that segment as well as all of the sentence dictation. Alex mimed summer activities such as rollerblading and fishing while I said the words. We also showed the class pictures from children’s books showing people berry picking, picnicking and other summertime activities. Alex, Linda and I all lead a Simon Says-type activity where learners replicated our movements as we mimed: fishing, berry picking, rollerblading, riding a bike, and rafting.

The DJ (that would be me) totally screwed up and only wrote down everyone’s first name on the attendance sheet I kept, so attendance is way off base. :(
