What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): good size class! We haven’t had 15 people in the evening for quite a while! We saw some old friends, but we have a crew of shy young women who come with chaperones.. it takes some encouragement to get them animated, but I think it will happen.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did Alphabet sheet, yell n spell which took a pretty decent amount of time. Patrik uses great techniques to extend an activity for a long period of time and it works! one of our learners started writing sentences instead of drawing with a marker on top of the letters written by one of the other students, I think it’s a wonderful and powerful achievement.

Date of Class: 5/3/16
Day of Class: Tuesday
Time of Class: 12-1:30pm
MC: Maureen R
DJ: Megan C
Assistants: Judy
Module: Phone Etiquette
How Many Learners: 17
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): good, but the box is stuffed so full, it’s difficult to find things and pull them out. Some organization/recycling might be in order.Self Evaluation

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 8Total Score: 32
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Maureen’s dress rehearsal, with Megan assisting as DJ and supporting MC as needed. There was another group in the room up until 12, and we got started a few minutes late as a result. It was a large class of 17 with a wide range in learner level. A couple of learners arrived late (one half-way through), but they happened to be higher-level and were able to jump in pretty seamlessly – one looked at another’s notebook and quickly caught up to where the rest of the class was in dictation. Maureen had some difficulty developing a rhythm in the alphabet listen and point, which we discussed during reflection. We lost the attention of a few learners at the higher and lower levels during that – the letter sequences were a bit too long and providing immediate feedback became difficult. We also lost engagement during dictation a couple times, while waiting for lower level learners. Toward the end of dictation, we had a higher level learner writing in large letters for a lower-level learner to trace, which worked well. While the flow was choppy at times, the learners were connecting and helping each other a lot, and seemed to like the novelty of the telephone dialogue modeling we did.

We then moved on to dialogue practice with a hair salon appointment where they had to fill in the blanks for certain sections, then practiced the conversation with each other. We then did an activity reading and practicing dialogue with different 911 emergency situations. We ended with some dictation and round robin of a, “Can You Hear Me Now” dialogue.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): started 5 minutes late. Omitted alphabet listen and point. Lesson was called: “Can you hear me now?” Many students were confused and/or did not understand their cell phone carriers so it was useful to practice. A lot of collaboration. Maureen was not in the attendance database. She was DJ. I said “NOT LISTED.” Collection and writing of loyalty cards was a work in progress as Maureen is learning the system.

What Happened: This was Ivy’s dress rehearsal, and it was a great class. She prepared a lot in advance, and that showed during the class. The lesson had good fluidity to it, with activities building on each other (e.g., dictation using a handout of a flower with its parts labeled, and later a round robin with actual flowers). The learners seemed to find the materials interesting and the energy/connection in the room was really good.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This lesson was Mark G’s final practicum. Alphabet say and point went well; students were challenged yet comforted by the repetition. Learners trickled in incrementally which forced Mark to revisit the introductions and name spelling as prompted by Patrik. There were two brand-new students; one was accompanied by an aid and left early, the other used a cell phone to decipher and translate the sentences Mark wanted the students to write. Mark played a song on the computer which the learners seemed to enjoy. After the song was over, students were prompted to write the lyrics to the song. There was a huge discrepancy in the competency of the students; some flew through the writing while a handful still struggled to finish. MC handed out copies of photos of the people mentioned in the song and other civil rights activists. Students were instructed to introduce the people on the copies to the learner to their left and so on, round robin style. Learners laughed and seemed to enjoy helping each other and making mistakes. They were helped along by the assistants. The class was a challenge for everyone, both logistically with late-comers, as well as technical difficulties with equipment, however, people were engaged and smiling.
