What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Qrysi dictated sentences having to do with Thanksgiving such as the heaviest turkey on record (86 pounds!!) and the weight of an average turkey and how fast a turkey can run. Learners were stunned and laughing at these statistics and looking up photos of huge turkeys. Some learners mimicked the sound of a turkey gobble after Qrysi played it on her phone. During the Round Robin, we asked each other if we liked turkey and who is the cook in our houses or if we celebrated Thanksgiving at all. Learners struggled with the meaning of the word PARADE–some thought we were saying PRAY until Q. found photos of a parade on her phone. They didn’t know the word or the spelling. High-level learners were challenged by this. Class was filled with chatter and laughter. We learned that approx. half the class celebrates Thanksgiving.

Learner asked for more reading pronunciation practice, the first/last name spelling was useful, but went on quite long, more than an hour. the clock stopped.

I think people enjoyed it.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Patrik dictated survey questions about pest control – who does it where learners live, how many pest encounters, how learners access pest control information. Learners responded to questions by raising their hand or not; Patrik tallied the results. The Q&A format kept the energy up among learners. Learners showing up late and leaving early posed some challenges. Also, there were several learners in attendance today (large for RWL tuesday evening standards); fortunately, Chelsea and Lucas were shadowing and provided extra support and reinforcement.November 15, 2017 at 1:10 pm #9432QrysiSpectatorLesson Title: Why do Americans celebrate Veteran’s Day?

The game was fun though. The class was split in two teams and the learners had to compete to create a word using scrabble pieces. A few learners were already making word that we used in the class before the MC named a few

Some questions were easy to ask and get a response from, others needed more context or explanation to get a response, even then not sure if some of the learners still completely understood what we we asking. Better visual example would have helped. Learners were still very engaged and asking each other questions and ask us questions.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A good class, but a week late with the journal update. Today, I chose to just focus on how one year after #45 was elected, I was worried and I’m still worried, but we are all still here, and I was grateful for that. Just one long dictation, but it was effective, and I don’t often get to tell the group how I feel about them. I think it had an impact on their sense of connection, which emerged quite strongly this week.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I was a little nervous about conducting the class alone as these RW sessions have gotten really big as of late, but Judy was there! Haven’t seen her in a long time! I brought in a Walgreen’s flyer as suggested and viola! Planned and executed the class around the random items on sale such as memory foam slippers, M&Ms and razor blades. I dictated sentences with an emphasis on THIS vs. THESE as I notice this is a struggle for Spanish speakers and for low-level learners. For higher-level learners, I could focus on singular vs. plural items on sale [this or these respectively] and received positive feedback from learners. During Round Robin learners asked each other how much certain items in the flyer cost and found the answers in the dictated sentences. They seemed to enjoy flipping through the flyer to locate words and phrases in S & F. We ended the class with a fun game of SHOPPING bingo with several of the words coming straight from the lesson and a few curve balls such as ‘promotion’ and ‘varieties.’ It was great to see a few learners I haven’t seen as it has been months since I have taught on Tuesdays!
