Lesson Title: The Curious case of the Hidden Rose

    Day of Class: Wednesday
    Time of Class: 12:00pm
    MC: Benjamin
    DJ: Izzy
    Assistants:NA
    Module: Nutrition
    How Many Learners: 12
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):
    Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) =5
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) =6
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) =6
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) =7
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) =6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) =6
    Total Score: 36
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Smaller class than last week but everyone was connected and one learner brought in snacks for everyone. Benjamin used a lot of writing prompts and there was a good balance of easier and harder sentences. The learners seem to enjoy the challenge and asked a lot of questions.

    10/23/17 12:00-1:30 class:
*I keep jumping the gun on my submission!!! UGH!!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today’s class was very rough–I was moving tables and finding chairs as people kept coming in the room while holding my lesson in my other hand. There were over 20 learners and I was by myself. I only got through about 1/3 of my plan and there were a LOT of kiddos to trip over and yell above, but I got through it in one piece!!
While reflecting on the class later, what I took away were these two salient features: 1) our learners LOVE to help us and their classmates any way they can–F. and C. were right there at the ready to help with moving tables and modeling the logistics of the class for newcomers. 2) Having very low-level learners who have a difficult time distinguishing one roman letter of the alphabet from the next really showcases those learners who have been with us for enough time where we teachers can see the progress they’ve made. It’s such a cool feeling to help one learner struggle with the shape of letters on the page and then have the person next to them ask me the tense of the verb we are working with when eight months ago they might not have been able to spell this word and didn’t know its definition.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

Jacob was late so I led the alphabet listen and point and dictated two sentences around fall/autumn and changing leaves. Jacob dictated sentences about state representatives and senators, did round robins with representatives’ names. One learner consistently called another learner by the wrong name, which appeared to bother the latter learner. It was not clear whether the learner was using the wrong name on purpose as a joke or by mistake.

It worked out ok as I was walking around and showing pictures, and discovered that one learner like had all the things for her go bag with her right then… the children were mildly difficult, one learner struggled throughout the class. took 4 days for me to update the website with this report.

There were some good words, and our higher skill folks def had something to chew on, but one of the least flowing classes I’ve had in years.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had two learners and a bunch of regularly returning learners. We wrote down a few sentences about Halloween, practiced a dialog about trick-or-treating, and played two games. The first game was vocabulary-style BINGO. The learners got kind of competitive so it was pretty fun. The second game was new to me and the learners had a blast! The MC spread a bunch of scrabble pieces on the table, shouted out a word, and the two teams had to work with their teammates to spell out the word correctly. One new learner came in really late and shied away from working with the people around her until this activity. She was laughing and it looked like she was having a lot of fun.
