What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The learners did a lot of talking today! We focused more on speaking and less on writing. It was a pretty high level class so they asked me a lot of questions. We used a map for listen and point.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today we focused on the Rockwood area, as most of the learners live there. We did the alphabet sheet, yell and spell, dictation, and finding locations on a map. We also informed the learners of the upcoming potential changes to the area that would lead to rents rising, so they could come out on October 15 and have their voices heard.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well, we got our big increase in people, almost doubling in size. it was tough because I left my visual materials at home, and I was sick, and there were several folks relatively low skill level, and we had a new shadower who was very nervous. Lots of dictation, the rhythm was bumpy. tough, but it’s good to see a big class again!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was good that most people came back. We worked with first aid kit, and there are some complicated words in there! Our new shadowers did great, and hopefully made some good connections with other organizations too. not the most amazing class, but an ok recovery from yesterday. At least one person said that noon is the perfect time for her 4 days a week.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I thought for a second that only one learner was going to show up, but suddenly, the library was like a clown car with people coming out of the woodwork to join the class including three new people who came in the last 1/4 of the class. Oddly, ever learner in the class was a Spanish speaker; this might be a first. It was a great dynamic with veteran learners and high-energy newbies. I focused on the different colored MAX lines and where they went for the sentence dictation and seek and find. For the Round Robin, I posed the question of whether or not each learner used public transportation. This served as a segue to pass out the Go cards and have learners fill out the form. Learners enjoyed coloring in the photocopies of the MAX map and bickered about which line is which color. Holy moley! There were certainly a lot of know-it-alls in the class and a LOT of laughing. Class ended with a cutthroat game of Scrabble Tile Word Spell. Learners enjoyed guessing which word I would have them spell next and the score was tied between the two evenly-matched teams several times. As usual, learners were fantastic in explaining the rules of the game to the three new people who seemed to enjoy the challenge of the game and the fast pace of the class. I’ll feel really great if all three newbies return. :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
All lower level learners in attendance today. Dictation was fairly complex so it took learners a while to complete. Fortunately, with only three learners in attendance Deborah and I were able to provide more individualized support to learners. Learners completed a worksheet where they identified 25 different types of birds, then played here it is. One learner yelled out, “I love birds” and seemed to really enjoy the activities with the bird worksheet.October 11, 2017 at 8:10 am #9310KilpatrickRelentlessListenerKeymasterLesson Title: The Rent Is Too High

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): nice large group, we hit 15 again, and we can expect it to increase even further throughout the month. Great to see! Judy, wonderful as always, Madeline got into the groove right away, Santiago so good to be back! Francisco came in a bit late, so we worked on another day he could come to have a better experience. The word cloud was great. The final activity was a little contrived and we went over a bit. It was amazing to see a friend and former learner from another site, she came in with her whole family.. I love that!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There were 3 new learners! But open hostility and clearly a racial divide between 2 new learners and 1 newer learner. I arranged the class to avoid racial tension the best I could but I’m ready to discuss better ideas. Aside from that we did round robin, listen and find with some hop pass information, and I gave out a few hop passes!

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 4
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 28
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A little smaller class than I expected, with one late learner causing a little rearrangement to happen. However, that learner speaks the same language as another learner, so it’s pretty cool that they can talk to each other! The materials were informative, but we needed a little something more active to get people engaged in multiple ways. Still, a couple of people may be able to access health services that might otherwise have not been able to, so a big win. Colin wants to come back again!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): told several housing stories.. the community land trust came up again. word cloud has a couple of duplicates. There was some expression about the politics of our class, in part because I accidentally passed out the Spanish versions. We didn’t collect testimony in this space though, and we will announce the meeting in following weeks.
