Measurement

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
This class began and ended on time. In addition to the usual lesson features (Alphabet Listen and Point, Yell and Spell, & lesson title dictation, as well as dictation of a few lines of the Measurements Song), a couple of new activities were added. Due to the presence of several new lower skilled learners the writing parts required more time than usual. After a question and answer dictation of several distances, we asked the learners to guess a few more, the furthest being the number of miles from Washington, DC to Moscow. We ended the class with a measurement terms scramble where the learners tried to figure out the mixed up words. The learners worked in groups, helping each other. A good time was had by all.

Ramin say that he has never laughed a lot in other classes, so he had a lot of fun. There was a guy that was being loud at the room he wasnt part of english class and I didnt want to ask him to leave the room because im not a library member so I want to know if the room is only for us? beside of that the class was perfect, we focused more in pronunciation and it helped a lot. We had a new student and I was helping her because she didnt know how to spell or write the words so I was helping her.

    Time of Class: 12-2pm
    MC: Patrik
    DJ:
    Assistants: Barbara
    Module: At the Doctor
    How Many Learners: 11
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): got rid of some old loyalty cards that were taking up space.. it does feel like it’s settling in though.

    Self Evaluation

Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 3
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 4

    Total Score: 27

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Not a bad class. positive feedback from some regulars, and really seeing their improvement. One person walked out who was new.. also forgot to get the name of another new person. This class felt like it was going so slow, dictation after dictation.. and I really think the larger room has something to do with that different feel. The two tables were somewhat language segregated at the beginning, but I mixed folks up later in the class, and they liked that. Will do that a little more with this group, or mix them up more at the beginning.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a very good class. One of our learners brought his brother into class and after the class he said that he liked it and that he finds it very useful. One learner didn’t feel good and probably was sick but she stayed for an hour and then left, I just wanna say that Joshua and I admire her dedication. It was Halloween so the theme was about that, at the end we did trick or treat with candies and every learner got a candy.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

This class began and ended on time. We had an influx of new learners. Upon entering the classroom each learner shook hands with Jane and received a card with both a printed and a brailled number on it, which they kept for the remainder of the class. Calling on each learner by number greatly facilitated Jane’s leading of Yell & Spell. Jane assisted in leading dictation and modeling the Do You Text round robin. A Listen and Do regarding the telephone was added to our lesson plan, and the class heard a recording of the song “Telephone Lines” by the Electric Light Orchestra. There were several humorous moments during this class, particularly when Jane dictated a phone number superfast or spelled a long word like telephone very quickly. Sometimes the timing was perfect. Many of the learners plan to return next week for another telephone lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Largeish group.. several new people came back, which was cool. Some surprising folks too.. and then, it looks like every class we get new random people, it’s creating a different dynamic with our classes, because we kind of have to integrate new people all the time. So, no tiny classes, but the classroom culture takes some work to develop. Laid out some of the Deck of Professions and used them.. we walked around the table, which was kind of neat, though the pointing activity wasn’t as good as it could be because of the table arrangement.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class began a few minutes late because we did not have any learners. Two learners eventually arrived. We also had one assistant from the library shadowing class. We did several Round Robin dialogues, and Listen and Do. Because of the small class size, the dialogues did not take long. We improvised with a dictation and choral response. Class ended on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was cold and windy, and veteran’s day.. honestly didn’t expect many people.. we did have a small class of five.. and it really got awkward at the beginning.. partly because I didn’t do the alphabet.. but jumped right into an activity looking at the home hazard sheet (which is really, so info dense, it’s challenging for anyone to read. A good example of bad information design). We did a lot of dictation and going around the room.. I tried to keep it relaxed but one of the learners, at least, seemed embarrassed and wanting to leave.. Another seemed .. not as happy and laughing as usual, though I haven’t seen her in a long time.. I felt too.. bossy in this class, at least at first, but it smoothed out a little later.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Tough day.. folks were distracted, and the activities really depended on them being able to work together, so the highest level folks were texting and not helping others, and when it came around to them, they weren’t paying attention so, they had to be coached. I tried to keep it sunny, but felt like I had to push a lot. I did an activity where they all had to memorize the names and spellings of various professions and that got them working together.. a couple of folks stayed pretty disengaged though.. a lot of writing though. I think being very selective about who is sitting with who, and even making high/low pairs could be productive at this point.. since the group is stabilizing a little bit.
