sketchy weather forcast and political uneasiness may have been factors for low attendance. There was only one learner who received a 4 on one private lesson! This was Marc’s Gentle Intervention and he utilized Patrik’s tips as he guided the single very low-level learner through a continuously tweaked lesson which was further honed as this learner showed signs of both understanding and not understanding. Marc patiently used repetition, modeling and instant positive feedback to encourage learner. The class was a great example of how to tailor a lesson off the cuff.February 9, 2017 at 9:25 pm #8436Marc CzornijSpectatorLesson Title: Plant A Tree, Hug A Tree

The learners were very engaged and helped each other lots and were eager to explain their own definitions of many new vocabulary words. We ended with a lightning speed game of the dialogue dictation, which left everyone laughing!

Smaller class, but it was super rainy and nasty. We focused on douglas fir trees and played a guessing game about how old a tree was based on its rings – it was really fun, and evoked some great laughs! I introduced the flyer for the 2-25 ELA and invited everyone and then passed out some cool stickers and buttons that Next Adventure gave me, which was a big hit.

Marc MC’ed the class with two guests, not including Ashlyn–Jenny from Friends of Trees and Nathan from Trimet. Dictated sentences had to do with tree planting and community involvement to get learners excited about the upcoming ESL Tree Planting “field trip” on Saturday. Round Robin included a dialogue about whether or not each learner has planted a tree and it was fun to guess who has and who has not planted a tree. Marc handed out stickers and pins and reminded the learners about the Tree Planting!!!March 2, 2017 at 10:02 am #8513Colleen RichardsonSpectatorLesson Title: Renter’s Rights

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a bit late in order to introduce and hear from a community member, who was invited to talk about two events coming up: the dance party at East Portland Community Center on March 17 and a community gardening opportunity at Vestal School on March 18. After the regular parts of the lesson, Luke did a dictation with important words regarding renter’s rights. This group had a range of learning levels, including one learner who is at the very beginning of writing and one who is near fluent – this made the pace a bit challenging. Also due to the timing being off, Luke didn’t get to do the two most dynamic parts of the lesson – a conversation dictation and a video clip from the musical, RENT. Even so, learners seemed glad to have attended class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There were lots of assistants to help, so we matched a learner or two with their own personal helper. The class was very lively and everyone was chatting and asking questions during any time spent waiting. Luke finished the lesson by showing a song from the movie RENT, which had a lot of the keywords we had been learning throughout the lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Tonight was Luke’s “Gentile Intervention” so Patrik was there to point out areas where Luke could improve his technique and materials while he facilitated the class. Luke dictated sentences for the learners to replicate that had to do with getting their deposits back from a landlord. Learners’ levels were all over the map and they helped each other while copying the dictated sentences and during the seek and find. After-class chat was illuminating and helpful for both Luke and me and we discussed other ways to execute and fine-tune our lessons and make them conducive to our attendees.March 17, 2017 at 9:30 am #8554QrysiSpectatorLesson Title: Birds on the Wing

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class started and ended on time. The class consisted of mostly the same level learners. The learners wrote down a few sentences and did choral response with that, listen and point with a flyer for the Nadaka Park excursion, listen and do, and round robin with pictures of birds. The class had good energy even though the MC was nervous.
