Only one learner but this made teaching the module more personalized to the one learner. Although the one learner was not currently employed, we still managed some useful all-around tips about talking with anybody in a higher position and general negotiation skills such as keeping calm, and being assertive but not aggressive (2 new words for the learner).

Since it was established that this learner did not work, we changed the topic up to “talking with teachers” regarding parent-teacher conferences and asking for more information or help from the teacher regarding a child’s education. We cover things such as asking for specificity and being direct. We also touched on some cultural elements such as punishments and rewards and expected behaviors of children.

Today’s score is N/A because even though we didn’t do anything that I had planned, everything went fine. Of course, this wasn’t intentional, it just started class with some small talk that turned into a more elaborate conversation between the two of us. Even though we didn’t do anything I had prepared, I enjoyed just talking with the learner and hearing her stories, opinions, suggestions, and struggles with learning English.

We worked on some questions formation and request etiquette, then to end the class, I had the learner read “Stellaluna” aloud.

We didn’t do anything that I had planned. The learner walked in and we just started talking, of course we worked on building vocabulary and pronunciation along the way, but this was definitely a more unstructured class. Despite not getting to anything I had prepared, we had a good conversation and the learner got lots of practice out of it! Next time, I will try to get things back to the lesson at hand.

We shared each other’s horror stories with calling the “maintenance guy”: time, cost, (not) fixing things; which I also used for dictation.

I had the learner write out what was happening in pictures that I had prepared and then we built stories around the pictures.

I didn’t bring a lesson plan, but I came on time. Due to that, things got off topic by a lot but we still had a pretty engaging conversation.

We had a new learner come in, yay! But then I told her that today was the last day at this site, so she decided to leave but I did inform her about the summer classes at Rockwood starting June 2, so hopefully she will be there, she said she would. Again, this is the last day, so we just talked about whatever the learner wanted to know about: primarily, my cultural background. So today was more of a Q/A for both me and the learner.
