What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was the first class and there were a lot of new students. We spent a lot of time in the beginning with the alphabet sheet and names. Then we did a dictation about emergency preparedness. We did a this is a bandaid, a what? a bandaid. Oh a bandaid. We did that with about 5 more objects from the first aid kit. Then we did a few more dictation exercises and then finished with acting out emergency preparedness for earthquakes with hand motions. Overall it was a productive and fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The theme of the night was apples. We started with alphabet sheet and names. Then moved to the dictation. Then we did a document search. Finally we passed around the apples and with this is a what… we ended with the principal talking to the family about their needs from the school and from the community. After it was over everyone stayed and ate apples and it felt like a community :) Awesome class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with alphabet sheets and names, and spent a while on these while learners trickled in. Then Zadok did a dictation with the name of the lesson. The rest of the activities used a cloze with a script from an earthquake preparedness PSA. We first did a document search with the script, then wrote out and practiced pronunciation of the words we had used in the search. After we watched the video several times, both slow and fast, and learners worked together to fill out the cloze. Finally, we did a question / answer round robin with some of the vocab from the document and then finished with a timed activity where we repeated the same question and answer but had each side of the table race against each other.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Jessica’s Gentle Intervention. She kept her cool even though the interruptions and switchbacks. Little chaotic with one child running around, and there was a moment where one of the learners might have felt a little shamed by me (patrik). I was trying to separate him and another learner, but it may have been taken as a criticism rather than encouragement.

After that we did Name Yell and Spell, and then a document search using an Emergency Kit checklist. Next we practiced describing people’s clothing (as an emergency response skill), and went around the table a couple times doing a Round Robin with a question / answer pair, trying to improve our speed. After that Grace split the table into two teams, and gave each team the task of memorizing what one of their team members was wearing, then sending that student out of the room for a minute, during which time their team had to list everything they remembered. After that we did the hot seat activity, where students practiced giving their name, address, and zip code. They practiced first in pairs, and then were called on randomly. Finally we dictated and practiced a sample 911 dialogue.
