What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Ian’s mom Traci was visiting and was an awesome guest shadower. Class had a moment of great hilarity. And was pretty upbeat throughout. MC tried an interesting phone related exercise that was fun but because the resource being accessed had changed formats, the exercise became less health related, but still of value as everyone had fun and followed Patrik’s directions. Great engagement between students and alot of smiling occurred. It is hoped that the table configuration at Kelly will be updated to allow shadowers to be able to walk around each table to better assist all of the learners. Excellent class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This report is being posted 13 days after the class happened. I remember one higher skill level Chinese speaker coming from Vancouver. We had one learner who really only ended up with us accidentally, which was kind of awkward, though she did ok. We worked with disease names and hospital experiences

Amanda’s Dress Rehearsal! It went great and she showed excellent poise. There was a fire alarm right at the beginning of class but it was handled well. Learners were engaged, and loved getting up and doing the Say and Do physical activity.February 27, 2018 at 9:25 pm #9773Ian ConnellySpectatorLesson Title: Vitamins and Minerals

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Na’ama brought the watershed model which worked great! We started by doing choral response on the parts of the watershed (farm, houses, river, roads, etc). We then passed around the pollutants “this is fertilizer” and then spread them on the model. Then we passed all of the items together “These are pollutants” “What?” “Pollutants!” Finally, we made it rain and watched all the pollutants run into the river and lake. After the model we did dictation: 1) People put fertilizer on their lawns. 2) Golf courses and farms use pesticides. 3) Construction sites create loose dirt. 4) Cows poop on the farm. Overall this was a very fun and visually rich lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a small group, one of the new learners struggled to understand the yell and spell portion, but with enough support was able to grab hold of the activity. We did a round robin “This is a……” with different vegetables. The learners were very engaged, connected well with each other, and laughed a lot.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A good sized group with a lot of variety in language levels. Ian led a very hands-on class, passing lots of food around (“This is Mac and Cheese”) with multiple foods being passed at the same time, which was fun and full of laughter. The document search consisted of an infographic with pictures and words of which foods provide which nutrients, a second infographic about which vitamins effect which part of your body, and then we document searched a nutrition label. After the document search, we put our hands in or out of the table when Ian asked about foods we like (“Do you like avocados?”). We didn’t do quite as much dictation as usual, and on reflection we thought perhaps we would have cut out the second infographic. Everyone seems like they had a good time today!March 6, 2018 at 10:23 pm #9799Ian ConnellySpectatorLesson Title: Living an Active Lifestyle

There was initial confusion between Christina and myself about who was MCing, but fortunately she had prepped a plan so MCed away, I filled in with another activity for the last 15 minutes. We had one new learner, a parent I’m really glad to see making the class. the rest are regulars and its a good sized class. We talked about different activities for exercise, then did a Listen and Do for them, and I think that was fun for learnersMarch 7, 2018 at 10:05 pm #9805Melissa StockingSpectatorLesson Title: Community Gardening

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Spencer from the Lent’s tool library came as a guest speaker for this class, which worked out great! He brought tools with him, and we did some dictation about the Lent’s tool library and the tools. We all got up to stand in a circle for passing around the different tools with “this is a shovel. a what. a shovel” activity, which was a fun break from the norm. Some of the higher skilled learners definitely connected with the material and understood the possiblity of getting tools from the library, which was exciting!

What happened: Today we tried something a little different. After a long time doing a document search on a page of the “top 14 vegetables”, we did a dictation “Is it a cauliflower?” “Yes it is” “No it isn’t”. Then Ian would pick a vegetable on the sheet and describe it using words on the sheet. “It is high in fiber” and a learner would ask “Is it spinach?” and Ian would say “no it isn’t” then he would go on to give more clues until a learner guessed it right. This was really fun for the higher learners, but we think it might have gone over some of the lower learners’ heads. By the end, some of the higher learners were giving the clues for other learners to guess. Another dictation and dialogue we practiced was: “Excuse me” “How can I help you?” “I am looking for vinegar” “Vinegar is on aisle 5”. We did a document search on another page about retail price versus unit price.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Smaller class today because of no head start. We did a listen and point with a sheet of beneficial bugs and pests, then some dictation, and then MC used that dictation to ask learners “Is this a good bug?” We weren’t sure how well that would go, but most of the learners really seemed to get it! Having a small class allowed us to engage each person with direct questions. We had pretty extreme difference in ability levels but everyone worked together well and seemed engaged. We then looked at the other side of the page which had different foods pollinated by bees, with another listen and point.
