What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a bit late due to the late arrival of learners. Nevertheless it ended on time. MC prepared an excursion around the Kelly School area. As we all walked various plants, structures and areas were pointed to and named drawing on new vocabulary as well as past lessons about green streets. Learners enjoyed outing and asked questions about various plants. MC had prepared for this outing by taking a previous walk and writing down what she saw. Ended class by talking about stewardship of green streets and neighborhood.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Very small class this evening. We started off the lesson with the same beginning set up and did some dictation. We then went on a small field trip to the Malden Court Community Orchard where we met with the MC’s friend who educated us about the garden and allowed the students to be more engaged with learning about the plants. It was a great learning experience and they were able to get a feel for the plants that are grown by the community, ask questions, and use their senses such as taste and smell. We then walked over to Bellrose Station to ensure they knew where classes would be. Overall fun and engaging class. Students enjoyed the trip and are informed of opportunities that the garden presents.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Smaller group than usual today but lots of enthusiasm and group cohesion. Ian had a bunch of Zillow listings and we searched for lots of details about rent, what was included, were pets allowed, etc. We wrote down questions and then asked the group. There was sometimes a bit of confusion when we transitioned from writing the question to asking the question. We also did the housing word cloud. It would be nice if the cloud also included words like “rent” and “monthly payments” etc. Amy from Green Lents came to talk about a fun event at Kelly this weekend. We handed out a flyer and did a listen and point, and then Amy dictated a couple of sentences about the event.May 30, 2018 at 5:43 pm #10204Cara FinlaysonSpectatorLesson Title: The Herb of Grace

What happened: This was a dress rehearsal for Zoe. She brought in bundles of herbs from her garden and based the rest of the lesson on these herbs. Her lesson plan included Alphabet, Names, This is Rosemary (which was repeated with other herbs around the table), Dictation. Midway through class there was a fire drill. She handled this well and upon return to the classroom we picked up right where we left off. Class ended on time. She’s a natural and one of the learners commented on how much fun they had and they liked her as an MC. The Lents Community Action Forum printout was used for a document search and provided to each learner.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Learners brought in food which was really thoughtful and fun. after alpha sheet we went and did a listen and point for a while and then took a break for a while to eat food. sort of improvised some language stuff with the food (“what’s this? this is coconut jelly!”) After we moved onto some good round robins that were based on the Bellrose station change next week. Feeling pretty confident that many of our learners here are going to want to continue at Bellrose.June 7, 2018 at 2:53 am #10221Zoe KellySpectatorLesson Title: A Trip to Reed Canyon

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The MC, DJ, and shadowers all arrived early and debriefed before the lesson began. Na’ama did a great job of informing us about the predictable parts of the lesson plan and the unpredictable parts. All 6 the learners arrived by 9:00 am and we did a brief round of Alphabet Listen and Point and Yell and Spell. We left for Reed Canyon at approximately 9:20 am. We were all able to fit in the 15 passenger van that Na’ama drove.
We arrive at Reed Canyon and Na’ama and Ian organized us into a buddy system so that each learner had a leader/assistant/shadower buddy that would help with the oral dictations. After that, we went to the amphitheater and met up with Zak the Reed Canyon Manager. He talked to the group about his role and explained the purpose of the fish ladder. Na’ama did an excellent job simplifying his statements into oral dictation sentences for the learners to listen to and repeat.
We walked a short loop around the canyon and Na’ama and Ian took turn point out and naming native plants. The learns repeated the names of the native plants, all of which were reinforced a few times during the walk.
At the end of the loop, we made our way back to the van and returned to Kelly where we quickly did loyalty cards for the learners.
