What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had just one learner today (but YAY! One learner!!). Kenadi and Canada acted as additional students, which helped. We focused on Halloween, talking about traditional costumes, practicing Trick-or-treating (and how to greet trick-or-treaters), and dictated some lyrics from “This is Halloween”.October 29, 2018 at 8:44 pm #10593Zadok TaylorSpectatorLesson Title: ??

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was the first day we had more than 1 student! Four of the six students were returning from last year. There was good energy throughout the class and there was a good group dynamic with the students helping each other and interacting with the facilitators. There was some disconnect in the choral responses with the Spanish speakers moving fast through them and the Vietnamese speakers moving more slowly.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Kenadi did a great job at her dress rehearsal today. We had 5 learners including one brand new learner! The group worked really well together. We ended up spending some time having a group conversation about learning English (started by the learners) which was really nice. I think the new student felt very welcome despite not sharing a native language with any of the other learners and having limited ability to express herself in English.November 7, 2018 at 11:20 am #10610Kenadi BrowneSpectatorLesson Title: Portland’s Affordable Housing

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We had seven learners and one brand new learner. The higher level learners did especially well in helping the lower level learners and they really engaged with each other during the dictation sections! The class flowed well and Ashley’s activities worked well with the levels of the class.November 14, 2018 at 11:16 am #10626Kenadi BrowneSpectatorLesson Title: PSU Transportation Survey

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The PSU transportation survey went well with a few changes in wording! Rachel included pictures of the types of transportation as well as options of transportation, which we all felt was very helpful to the learners. We made some changes for clarity as well: changed “religious activities” to “church or temple”, “Which day did you go to work?” rather than “When did you…” , found that the lyft logo was difficult to read for non native English speakers, said “visit friends or family” instead of “friends or relatives”, used transportation instead of travel. The learners were very engaged with each other and there was lots of laughter today! Overall great class

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The learners had a ton of fun today! They were engaged and asked lots of questions, which is great with this class size because it becomes a solid, on-topic discussion. Amanda brought a word search and they were a bit intimidated a first but really liked it after a while! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The survey was a bit tedious and did not engage the learners in the most effective way. We noticed that computer use was difficult (using mouse/keyboard, typing) overall.
For question #4, most learners wanted to input a distance answer (2 blocks) rather than a time answer (5 minutes). For #9, Amanda had to take a good amount of time to explain/rephrase the question. For #18, we are unsure if the learners understood that they were intended to answer the total household income rather than just their personal income. #23 was a confusing question for our learners because they all have cars- would it be possible to skip a question based on a previous answer?
We also noticed that some of the phrasing may be difficult: vehicle vs. car, career vs. work, excellent vs. very good.
We thought another good question might be “Have you ever used Trimet?” because a few of our learners had not.
It was also helpful to have higher English level learners helping lower English level learners because they could often explain questions in a way that made more sense to the lower level learners. Overall, all learners were successful in completing the lesson and the survey within the class time.December 3, 2018 at 1:28 pm #10674Kenadi BrowneSpectatorLesson Title: Singing for Christmas

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We listened to, dictated, and followed along to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Learners really enjoyed the music and singing along! We also did a Christmas word search. Our reflection was full of new ideas for class topics and constructive dialogue about how we can continue to develop our learning materials. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We spent time talking about the weather. Kenadi printed out a week’s forecast of the weather in Portland, and then we dictated questions and had them find the answer (“is it supposed to rain this weekend?”). After that we had a small end of year party and spent time chatting about children, traveling to Vietnam, and how you invite someone to take food “Please help yourself!” Lots of good connections today!December 10, 2018 at 4:48 pm #10698Amanda GreenvossSpectatorLesson Title: Here comes Santa Claus!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was a small class but everyone seemed to be having fun. We learned and sang “Here comes Santa Claus” and had a REALLY good time doing a memory game with Christmas items. After we played memory twice, we wrote down all the words and then did a round robin with a few “This is a wreath.” A good fun class!December 12, 2018 at 5:28 pm #10704Kenadi BrowneSpectatorLesson Title: Best gift ever!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We talked about “America’s Most Common Gifts,” connected the vocabulary with pictures, and did a round robin activity with the gifts. Learners especially enjoyed talking about getting money as a gift and being silly in the round robin. Amanda got some good feedback from Ramin about the structure of Kelly’s classes. Overall a great class with lots of laughs! -
