Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): I printed out 10 more alphabet sheets and there were enough extra loyalty cards, however, there were no self-reflection forms available for me to fill out so I took a blank sheet of paper and wrote all of the reflection down on that.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
For this class, the students were introduced to an emergency disaster kit. Brian brought a backpack into the class that was filled with the emergency disaster necessities like a first aid kit and a water filter and the students were asked to determine what those items were in the bag and how to spell the word. Then, once students were familiar with the items in the kit, Brian explained to them why it was important to have one (like to prepare for the big earthquake) and the students were asked whether they had one in their homes. To end the class, Brian gave the students a few Red Cross links that they could check out to start building their own kits.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): In lieu of our usual class, we ate a spaghetti dinner together. The school was holding the annual Spaghetti Dinner, so the learners/Mc/Dj, etc, grabbed some dinner from the cafeteria and returned to the library to enjoy a meal and conversation together. It was a great way to deepen our connections by getting to know one another.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I invited a refugee from Burma with whom I am paired up through a capstone class at PSU. I have to show him important places in my life and so I invited him to my class at Irvington Elementary. He seemed to enjoy the class. I had a hard time finding the PPT tool box with loyalty cards but it was my fault. I did not communicate with Keli or other teachers about that question. Eventually, I figured it out. The class was fun and everyone enjoyed the complexity of the sentences and emergency phrases that I used for dictation.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was great to see some of the learners who attended the spaghetti dinner come back for class this week. Lizzy did an excellent job of connecting basic ideas about the benefits/drawbacks of usual social media-
Connection to the world vs disconnection/isolation of individuals in close proximity to one another. It was cool to see the connections learners were making to the concept, which I think was a statement about the way the lesson was simply organized.

A rousing activity of acting out types of volunteer activity was fun and brought the energy level of the group up.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class tonight with 5 learners! Laurel shadowed again and was a great addition to the class. One of our learners brought ice cream to celebrate the day, which was Mother’s Day in Mexico. The learners were challenged by some of the word pronunciations- healthier/heathy/helping all seemed to be difficult words to discern from each other, as well as the challenge to say ‘volunteer’ and using the ‘th’ sound. Brooke was there to evaluate Lizzy but it wasn’t clear to me what for. Great class as usual, Lizzy!

We also physically acted out volunteering opportunities which was so much fun!
