Relatively lower level learners in attendance today. Dictation went fairly slowly and learners were shy/quiet when reading aloud. Matt and I pushed learners to be louder a few times; though we could/should have pushed a little more. Learners brought homemade tamales and pasta salad to share while completing an emergency preparedness listen and point and a word search.October 26, 2017 at 8:34 pm #9373Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Are you prepared for an emergency?

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Two lower level learners and one mid level learner in attendance today. All learners are fairly timid/quiet, so class energy/engagement was lower today than previous classes (choral “ready” was consistently weak and learners didn’t laugh as much today as in previous classes; but that’s not to say things were uncomfortable or went poorly, just more chill than most classes). We watched Drop, Cover, Hold On! earthquake response video; played Here it is with a FEMA emergency checklist; played this is a what with pictures of firefighters, police officers, and paramedics; read aloud summaries of three disaster relief orgs (FEMA, American Red Cross, American Black Cross); and ended class with a word search with emergency preparedness vocab.November 2, 2017 at 8:37 pm #9395Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: There’s an election coming up.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Four Spanish speakers in attendance. We dictated colloquial phrases about pest control and home remedies. Eventually we did round robin with all of dictation so that learners had small conversations with each other. We also made a list of common pests and pest control methods/products. Learners were all familiar with pesticides and home remedies for pest control, so the content was relevant to them. I arrived just a few minutes before 6pm, so my preparation could have been better. That said, I was fairly poised throughout the class; I improvised the whole lesson plan and it turned out well.November 30, 2017 at 8:02 pm #9473Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Keeping Warm This Winter

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Three lower level learners in attendance, with two young children which made class very hectic, made the listening and pronunciation activities difficult. Kaidi shadowed and was able to get the kids to calm down and draw with colored pencils, which allowed us to get back on track. We did this is a what with jacket, scarf, beanie hat, sweatshirt, sweatpants, pajamas. Played round robin with questions like Do you like hot cocoa? Have you been to the clothing closet? Read aloud and played here it is with flyer for a toy exchange and coat giveaway.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Two mid/lower level learners today. They are regular attendees and sisters, so connection was high. They are fairly timid learners, so it is often difficult for me to push them to pronunciate. But with only them in class today I felt much more comfortable getting them to repeat words more often and pushing them to pronounce things correctly. We covered material around snow days, delays, and closures. Learners read the Reynolds School District winter closure/delay protocol aloud, played here it is with an Oregonian article about the winter storms last year, and played this is a what with pictures of tire chains, slushy sidewalks, a snow plow, and a snowstorm or blizzard. -
