What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After some initial confusion about who was teaching and disorganization with materials on this first class here this fall, we had some laughter and fun with name spelling, talking about what foods we love, like or dislike, and passing kitchen utensils around the circle. It was great to see the learners already bonding, helping each other with spelling and pronunciation. We had a slightly shorter class to transition into computer lessons.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Patrik showed up just on time. I rearranged tables. It was a good exercise to go around the room and say everyone’s name. We did a listen and point with maps, talked about the difference between “Where do you live?” and “What part of town do you live in?” and used this as a role play.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a big class. David struggled a little bit with how to move the kitchen utensils around the room, as well as the peanut butter song. Names warm up was nice. I’ve forgotten a lot because we couldn’t update the website, and it’s been nearly a week now since this class happened.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

This class began slightly late but ended on time. Alphabet listen and Point was dispensed with due to the higher skill level of the group. Instead Jane gave a short dictation, introducing herself to the group. Yell & Spell 2 followed; due to the smallness of the group last names were spelled as well. Wash your hands dictation then listen and do were followed by questions about a sugar cookies recipe handout. There was much laughter and camaraderie among the learners, who eagerly helped each other.

my first time at East Gresham elementary and we had 8 learners and David did an awesome job. We were playing with the ball and learning directions at the same time. Like North South west, north west etc, pretty fun!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):We had Paul from a local church as a special guest. I started with a simple role play based on the title of the lesson. We did a brainstorm on the names of cities and towns near Gresham, which led to a fun thing, students spelling for me the (complicated) names of some towns in Mexico! We did a listen and do using directional words. I did a dictation of addresses in the area, which led to great questions and a really good discussion about how we say numbers in the USA. We finished with a song, which led to some great vocabulary questions. The class is really jelling, with people helping each other out and connecting much more than I’d seen before; it’s really feeling for the first time like a little community! We were once again in the small room way in the back; Laura said we’ll be there from now on and apologized profusely for that, but I told her it’s okay, and later, the students told me they like it better there, anyway.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):We are meeting in the original room #1 again. It’s really nice to see beginning level students return and not feel discouraged, that they feel safe and comfortable enough to come back. I noticed there was still some challenge with some people saying their own and others’ names, so we worked on dictations and round robins of”What is her last name?” “My last name is…” We did a listen and do with different ways of communicating: Call me, write me a letter, FAX me, text me, Skype me, come on over. which produced some good questions about what FAX is, and what we mean exactly by “Come on over”, which then led to a brief conversation about all the meanings of “over”. We started to learn a song by Jim Croce about looking at old photographs. This group is really bonding and feels like a group of friends.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

This class began slightly late because we had to wait for use of the classroom. 2 brand new learners showed up, bringing today’s total to 11. The learners helped each other spontaneously during class activities and there was much positive laughter. Several questions were brought by the learners, mainly the differences between words like shopping and chopping, and a couple meanings of iron as opposed to the very different word item. In addition to the normal core activities we had a grocery store round robin after the lesson title dictation, and a shopping Listen and Do. Jane briefly demonstrated her use of the iBill, a machine which speaks the denomination of American paper currency. This class ended on time.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

This class began and ended on time. It was characterized by a lot of camaraderie, understanding and encouragement among the learners, who were very quick to help each other in a positive way. They are all going through the same hard experience of learning English, so all were willing to lend a helping hand to those who were struggling. We worked a lot on pronunciation; some of the learners pronounced “name” as “neigh”. We also shared with them the difference between “his” & “her”. David set up a table on which we placed real-world grocery items, which he divided into aisles: produce, paper goods, canned goods, and hot beverages (coffee and tea) and each aisle had a numbered sign in front of it. Jane would ask each learner which aisle a certain product was on and the learner answered in a complete sentence. Class ended with 3 announcements: today was the last Tuesday class for this year and Thursday will be the last class at East Gresham Elementary School in 2014. We did not forget to announce and invite all the learners to attend the November 28th potluck, and after class several learners expressed to Jane that they would really like to come. A great time was had by all in attendance.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A small class to finish. We were also in a different room. We talked about and wrote different ways to introduce, say thank you and you’re welcome, and we practiced asking for each other’s names without looking at our papers. We did a dictation about the upcoming potluck and we finished with a song.
