What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Some new faces some old ones… Tough to get the new ones going but it was starting to happen a little bit near the end. Very grateful for the returnees who kept the mood light and funny. Franz was awesome, and Heather had a great new topic to work with matching their education campaign.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I was several days late in posting this reflection, so some has faded – but what was noticeable was by the second class, two of the new learners had really switched.. they were freaked out the first class, and completely happy and engaged the second, and really working on it. Wonderful to see!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Good feeling in the class, but then started to feel like it was dragging a little bit.. with Vietnamese speakers, you kind of have to give them enough to feel comfortable with, but then make sure you switch directions so they don’t stick with just that way. Franz was great, but I pointed out something the middle, and it hit him extra hard. Need to be gentler with that. The learners are getting stuff, though.. also we had a new visual to use in class about the foundations of quality food.. really nice. Key words, arranged with a visual metaphor. That’s what’s up!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well, I forgot to post this class, so I’ve missed a bit, but Franz is definitely getting into the swing of things, and has very insightful comments. Today it was nice to see a group of 8, and a Spanish speaker joined us – the newest Vietnamese speaking learners are definitely showing progress and confidence.

Date of Class: 4/28/15
Day of Class: Tuesday
Time of Class: 330-5pm
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Franz, Jacob
Module: Safe Quality Food
How Many Learners: 1
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): Alphabet SheetsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 4
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 30
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was just Jacob. Franz, and I with one learner. Most of the class was about “major injury” and I had Franz & Jacob dictate their situation to Yolanda – we practiced confirming – you were in a body cast for 3 months? There was also itch, scratch, catch, pitch..

Lesson Title: Hard Boiled Eggs & Telenovelas
Date of Class: 4/30/15
Day of Class: Thursday
Time of Class: 330 – 5pm
MC: Patrik
DJ:
Assistants: Franz
Module: Safety Assessment
How Many Learners: 1
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): more alphabet sheetsSelf Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 4
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 4
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 4
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 5
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 5
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 27
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Franz and I ranged here and there with topics. Lots of pronunciation work, and we saw some real success with consonant final t with our single learner. We tried to work on a telenovela, dictating and translating, but it wasn’t that helpful. Finishing up with dictation about the hard boiled egg was interesting. Oh! Also a discussion about colloquial language vs slang, regional variation.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5Total Score: 31
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Small group.. many folks weren’t there who usually come. We helped folks see that Franz sounds like Prawns if you say P instead of F! Franz helped me realize that one of the learners might be just getting good at making the alphabet listen and point look good, not staying engaged. This is out of my awareness and we’ll keep an eye on it.
