What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Joseph facilitated a document search using the recent article pertaining to the gas leak and explosion in downtown Portland recently. Learners seemed to know about it and helped each other with meaning of terms such as “explosion” by miming with their hands and making explosion noises. Joseph had students write down short and long/complex sentences about gas and what to do in a natural gas event. Students worked together. As there were several higher-level learners, everyone got through very long sentences. Class concluded with a round robin which included smelling a very stinky piece of sulfur.

In place of the usual Yell & Spell, Patrik mixed it up with having the learners yell out the letters in their names quickly while students wrote them down. Patrik and Tanya dictated sentences having to do with the recent storms that hit the Oregon coast, other natural events such as lightning storms, hurricanes and tornadoes. The class repeated questions Round Robin style such as “Have you ever seen a tornado?” We learned about the different storms students have witnessed and were surprised by how many said that they had never seen lightning (they probably have :) ). Students got silly when answering questions about items in Patrik’s Emergency Kit such as a biohazard bag–they said yes to things that they probably have never used and made up stories to accompany their answers. The energy and camaraderie of the class was great!

I (Maureen) showed up even though I wasn’t scheduled to be there and no one else was there, so I texted Ramin to find out what was going on just as Patrik walked in and started the class. Even though the class was a little rocky at first, it was very intimate and conversational. Patrik dictated sentences that he grabbed from the personal chatter going on and we practiced dialogues having to do with where we’ve been in Oregon and what places we like visiting. A new student with physical challenges came to class, was tentative and extremely shy and low level. By the end of class, he was smiling and joking. The students were extremely helpful with each other.

    KATIE’S DRESS REHEARSAL! Ta~da!!
Alphabet Point & Yell and Spell were great. Katie dictated the name of the lesson while learners wrote. She had everyone move to the giant map on the floor after removing their shoes. Learners located towns, cities and rivers by physically moving to where they were on the map. K conducted a Round Robin asking questions such as: “Have you ever been to Redmond?” K told learners where to go and by what route while learners followed directions. Class concluded with students writing dictated sentences pertaining to the size and population of counties in Oregon.

Learners wrote sentences having to do with preparing cookie dough ingredients. She then stated a round-robin where she passed ingredients such as chocolate chips and baking powder around the class. We then mimed actions such as stirring and measuring for learners to mimic. Class concluded with a high-energy game of “Make the Word!” using lettered tiles. Fun, collaborative, small class with cookies!

This was Alex’s second silent class. He conducted the entire alphabet point using sign language which the learners responded to very well and with interest. Alex signed his name to start off the Yell and Spell and I took over the rest of that segment as well as all of the sentence dictation. Alex mimed summer activities such as rollerblading and fishing while I said the words. We also showed the class pictures from children’s books showing people berry picking, picnicking and other summertime activities. Alex, Linda and I all lead a Simon Says-type activity where learners replicated our movements as we mimed: fishing, berry picking, rollerblading, riding a bike, and rafting.

Joseph introduced the lesson which included phrases such as “It’s your turn,” and “You won!” He dumped out tiles and explained the rules of a domino game. Most of the learners got the hang of the game for the most part, but much assistance was needed. Students helped each other out a lot by telling them where to place their domino tiles and showing them when new tiles needed to be drawn from the “bone pile.” Some students were quite competitive and a few really didn’t catch on to the rules but seemed to have fun and communicate throughout. The class was fun and interactive.

A few were confused about the word VERY having only one “R.” Liz dictated directions for making a smoothie while students wrote them down. Then students repeated these commands per Liz’s direction while I executed them with ingredients for smoothies. We enjoyed our smoothies as it was a hot day. Round Robin–“Do you eat berries?” followed by passing around sheets of paper with the different parts of a berry drawn on them. Spanish-speaking learner explained that in Spanish, the word for “bone” is the same as the word for “pit” yet in English, they are different. Class went very well and people were still actively engaging with each other when class was over.

He then scattered a bag of dominoes all over the table to the delight of the students. He asked the learners to pick only the 5’s, etc and make their own “stash.” They were very competitive. The next sentence dictation matched the activity; for example: Simon, Iryna and Anastasiia picked the most.
