Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 8
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 8
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 8

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a good laugh over our two learners, who are friends, who have the same name. One is_____#1, the other_______#2. When I started calling them simply #1 and #2, they thought that was hysterical. When we passed around the wooden train set signs with “Deer crossing” and “Detour” on them, I asked some of the children of the learners, who were at their breaking point for occupying themselves, “Hi _____! This is a WRONG WAY” sign, they didn’t want to have anything to do with me and left their parent alone to continue with the class. This was a really fun class with a LOT of laughing!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There were two new learners who had no idea what the class was about. They were nervous, but rocked it! They didn’t know each other, but ended up laughing and helping each other with spelling and taking turns having the correct spelling; they started to get competitive and it was really fun! We played Scrabble Scramble for the last few minutes of class where they frantically flipped through their notes looking for the words I called out. After-class chat with Jessica was great; she asked a lot of questions and saw how each component pf the lesson worked together and was part of the whole pie.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners used their translation apps to decode the sentences I dictated. This lesson is not one of my favorites, but it is very important and I think the learners could see that it was information that they should know. I moved people around based on their level and it worked great putting learners who are much higher level in the position to help others. There were far fewer children of learners to contend with this afternoon so learners could focus better on the lesson and were very engaged with it and with each other.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Finally!!!! We built it and they came!!! (thanks to Patrik and Desiree, the barkers) Five learners came and had coffee. When we got to the part of the lesson where I dictated “Where are you from?” they were very curious about each other and from what part of the world they all came from, so I spied a nice globe on a high cabinet and a ladder…you can guess what happened next…It was a great class with lots of chatter and many questions about other classes and what their schedules are. I’d like to put together a list of all the classes in the area and what time they occur to hand out to people. We might already have this??? Also, Desiree came in to the class to take photos to use to advertise for the class before her admin meeting.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The actual class was great; everyone worked together and were laughing and helping each other while we passed around the kids toys I brought in that were wooden signs from a train set–detour, no U-turn, people crossing, etc. I dictated sentences that were short directions to schools and libraries in the area. We asked each other if we’d been to Midland Library, Oliver School, etc. The trying part of today’s class was the children of the learners being unsupervised and without enough to do. They were loud and distracting, throwing balls and climbing all over everything. It made it difficult to focus and work one-on-one with learners.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Dictated sentences that were pertinent to Know Your Rights such as remaining silent and not answering questions. A few learners asked me what the ICE acronym stood for and looked up information about them on their phones and passed the info to their seatmates. We played a very competitive game of Scrabble Scramble and since these folks were quite high level, we challenged them with tough words such as ‘approached’ and ‘enforcement.’

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Andres dictated sentences about the census with a few difficult words such as “decennial” which forced a few learners to use their translating apps. We asked each other if we would participate in the census if someone knocked (another toughie) on our doors and asked about our household (another tricky word for the learners, since a few were familiar with HOUSE, but had not seen the word with HOLD added at the end.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This is the third time I’ve taught this lesson. The learners enjoy touching and smelling and looking at all the ingredients I bring with me to show them how to make their own soap while they write down the complete ingredients and how to. They leave with directions to make their own laundry soap and one lucky winner leaves with a 3-load sized portion of laundry soap. Great talkative and curious class!!! And I invited them to the IMMIGRANT POTLUCK!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I dictated sentences pertaining to Veteran’s Day and the military. During Round Robin, we asked each other if we had family members who served or are serving in the military, then asked a subsequent question about which particular branch of the military–Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. I recycled this lesson and enjoy learning surprising facts about the service of some of our learners! Today, I learned that one of my most dedicated learners served in the Army Corp. of Engineers in his home country.

Mimed grating, pouring and measuring for learners to replicate to much laughter. Moved learners around so everyone was book-ended with a higher-level neighbor and discussed how we could move the tables to create more intimacy during after-class chat. Class ended with me shuffling the attendance cards and Charlotte choosing a card. The learner on the “chosen” card got to take home a mason jar of lavender-scented DIY laundry soap I used for an example in the class. The winner was very excited!!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was Charlotte’s Dress Rehearsal. We did some dialogue about how we figure out when Thanksgiving is; how it’s not a set day like Christmas. We watched a video and Charlotte dictated sentences that were on the video and replayed the video so that learners could have another chance to hear the sentence they just wrote. There was a little extra time, so we ad-libbed another question about who we were all going to cook for, to much laughter since two of the learners are boys under 10 who giggled about not cooking. Charlotte was poised and did a great job with the lesson and leading the class.
