    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was a challenge with today’s class, as there was no room available to hold class due to a scheduling issue at the library. However, Anne was prepared as Zadok and Patrik had made sure that we were all aware of this ahead of time, so we spent the majority of class doing a library scavenger hunt! We did start with the alphabet listen and point, and did do the yell n spell (albeit quietly). Then we moved on to the scavenger hunt, with students working in small groups. We thought that maybe this would have been a better challenge had we assigned the groups, so that we could mix up the language levels and well as having people who spoke different native languages working together. Overall though, this was a very fun activity! The more advanced students seemed to feel accomplished at being able to finish the scavenger hunt on their own, and I stuck with the same group of beginner level Spanish speakers the entire time. I really liked that not only were we to find specific things around the library, like the closing time, things on the events calendar, and books by a certain author, but also that there were things we needed to ask the librarian. My favorite part of the lesson was talking to the librarian, and asking them a question, and then having each learner in that group ask them the same question, so they knew that they could use a librarian as a friendly resource if they had questions at the library. I thought that Anne did a great job of staying on track and keeping the class together and engaged, especially considering some disruptive circumstances. Also, this was Richard’s first shadowing experience! We went over the general idea of how a class works, and also went over the DJ and MC responsibilities. He is a former teacher so we definitely encouraged him to stick with the program and get into teaching. I think he had a great experience and I know that I did. Great class!

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a challenging but fun class! The new location of the library room at St. Andrew is helpful in that it is less noisy than being right next to a Zumba class. However, it also presented a challenge – as there were three adorable children there whose parents were there for the class who ended up getting into the library books and making a big mess! Ian and I both tried to get the kids to keep things tidy, but it was a distraction in class that we both could have handled in a more effective way. After the class we reflected on ways that we could redirect the kids’ attention, like bringing crayons to keep with the PPT box at that location, or possibly having the DJ take the kids into the hallway and play a game. Next time I’m at St. Andrew I will try to have an activity for the kids available. Previously in the other room, I would just give them crayons, which seemed to work well. Other than that minor distraction, the learners did a good job of staying focused and participating. We started with the alphabet listen and point, then the yell n spell (which we repeated when new students trickled in later in the class), and a dictation progression of the title of the lesson. We went over common items and their names (a worksheet that Ian brought), and did a listen and point with that worksheet. We also did a document search with a worksheet called “maintaining your apartment”, and practiced the phrases on that worksheet. We did a listen and do with several common activities like “sweep the floor”, “wash the dishes”, “hang up the laundry”, etc. This seemed to be the activity that everyone enjoyed the most! Personally I always love these activities as they give the learners the opportunity to use their bodies to learn the material. We ended with a dialogue about offering to help with chores, which was fun. Overall a challenging but fun class, with a lot of laughs!

    I really enjoyed this class and believe that the learners did as well! We started with the alphabet listen and point, yell n spell, and a dictation progression of the lesson title. Then we did a dictation progression of a dialogue about emergency preparedness and practiced the dialogue as a round robin around the room. One thing I really enjoyed about this class was that Daniel brought in a page from a graphic novel and used that for a document search. I loved this because it felt like he was adding a pop culture element to this activity, as well as the pictures kind of acting out the dialogue in the story. All of the learners wanted to take home these pages, which indicated to me that they wanted to look at them more outside of class. We also practiced a document search with an emergency preparedness pamphlet. I think that this class was helpful as it introduced vocabulary that the learners had maybe not heard before – like earthquake, emergency, and “freaking out” – a phrase that we say all the time in spoken English but will most likely not be on a pamphlet. One thing that I thought Daniel could do in his next class would be to use “ready?” as a way to get the class to focus on the task at hand, as well as increasing the volume of his voice so that people can really hear his pronunciation. I really liked the way that he did the alphabet listen and point – it was challenging for the learners but it wasn’t chaotic or overwhelming. Overall this was a great class and I thought Daniel led a fun and interesting lesson! Great job, Daniel.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fun class last night! We started with the Alphabet Listen and Point/ Yell n Spell, and then moved onto a dictation progression about the title of the lesson. Next we looked at a label of Meyer’s cleaning product, and did a listen and point. We practiced a dialogue/ round robin of “Can I borrow some washing detergent?” “Of course!”, modeling down. My favorite part was the Memory Vocab activity, in which Vanessa gave everyone a worksheet with pictures and corresponding vocabulary words. She was able to describe/ act out the words on the worksheet in addition to the pictures, which I thought was very helpful in providing further clarification to the learners. Then Vanessa blacked out the words on her worksheet, and learners had to guess what the pictures indicated when she pointed at them. We ended by doing a dictation progression of three sentences about the vocabulary words we had learned in the last activity. During the reflection, we talked about the alphabet listen and point – both of us have found this to be one of the hardest activities while being an MC, and we talked about the different approaches we have both tried in classes and which ones have been more effective for us. Making it difficult for the learners by speeding up and doing unexpected variations seemed to be more effective than having them remember long strings of letters, which we even had a hard time remembering. We also talked about bringing real objects into the classroom, like Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap. I enjoyed this class and it seemed like the learners did too, as there was a lot of laughter in this class.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a challenging class! Laurel was running late due to taking a wrong turn on accident (and notified me via text before class started), so I started the lesson on time by doing the Alphabet Sheets until she arrived at about 6:10. Laurel said that she had a hard time because she had to jump right in after the class had already started, and she also said that the number of learners was more than she was expecting. I thought she did a great job stepping up to the plate and taking over the class once she arrived – I know that those circumstances would stress me out if I were the MC, but I could not tell that she was frazzled or stressed during the class. She had a great attitude for the duration of the class. We continued with the Yell n Spell, and then moved on to a dictation progression of the lesson title and a dialogue about financial aid. We practiced reading the dialogue together as a class. Laurel brought in a copy of her own college class schedule, and we did a document search with times as well as vocabulary words and class titles. Next, we did a dictation progression of a dialogue about textbooks that Laurel brought into the class – this was my favorite part of the class, because she brought in a variety of textbooks, including new and used ones as well as a wide range of topics. Then we practiced the dialogue as a class, going around the room. We ended with a dictation progression of a list of steps to enroll, which Laurel pulled from the Portland Community College website on her laptop. Alondra thought that one thing that could have gone better would be to mix up the seating arrangement – the room was pretty clearly divided between the Spanish learners and the Vietnamese learners, and she thought the class could benefit from mixing up the groups, which Laurel and I both agreed with. I thought that it would have been helpful to go over more vocabulary for the students before practicing the dialogues, due to the wide range of language levels at this location. We all enjoyed the formal topic of the lesson, and thought it was very relevant to the lives of students who may wish to enroll in college. I also brought in a tongue twister for one of the advanced level students – he was practicing one at the end of the last class, and I think he enjoyed seeing a new one, as it is helping his pronunciation and it’s silly and fun. I’ll probably bring in another one for him next week if I am scheduled at Midland again. Overall, I think we all learned a lot from this class – both learners and teachers.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): What a great class! Ramin started off with the alphabet sheet and yell n spell. Next we moved onto a dictation progression of the title of the lesson, and then did a dictation progression of new vocabulary words like pharmacy, medication, prescription, etc. We did a round robin of “Are you feeling sick?” “Yes, I am/ No I’m not”. We also did a listen and do (TPR) which included cough, sneeze, and drink, which was both Ramin’s and my favorite part of the class – Ramin had the learners act out the verbs, rather than just repeat them. The learners seemed to enjoy this a lot and one learner even said in Spanish that they’d been sneezing that week and now they had the word to express that in English. Next, we did another dictation progression of a dialogue about picking up a prescription from a pharmacy, and practiced it around the room. We ended with a Listen and Point with a word cloud containing many medical vocabulary words. Ramin wondered during the reflection if having two learners switch seats was a good idea, and it was a good move and worked well. I would not have changed anything about this class, except the room we were in, as there was a loud event going on next door. One of the learners requested that we use the other room at St. Andrew’s on Tuesdays as this is normally the case, so we will try to do this going forward. Overall, one of the best classes I’ve been a part of! Working with Ramin is always a pleasure and I learned a lot by observing him.

    This was a great class! After the alphabet sheets and the yell n spell, we did a dictation progression using school terms like “elementary school”, “middle school”, and “high school”, as well as using ordinal numbers to describe grade levels. We also did a document search with a school supply list, and practiced a dialogue about the school supply list. We played a game of school supply bingo and the learners loved it! We did a round robin at the end using a highlighter and a backpack to talk about what the items were called. Melissa said that the thing she would have changed would be to bring prizes for bingo next time. I thought the class went really well – there were two learners who had never attended a class there before and it was really cool to see how welcoming and helpful the other students were towards them.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

    This was such a fun class! I was thankful that Fernando requested to shadow today. He was very engaged with the learners throughout the class. Our topic was staying cool, so I thought it would be fun to learn vocabulary about going to the pool! I wore a pineapple button down shirt, lemon print shorts, and flip flops to try to set the fun tone of the class. I also brought a tote bag with things that I would bring to the pool – a swimsuit, sunglasses, sunscreen, a towel, and flip flops, and the learners practiced talking about the things they are bringing to the pool by pulling them out of the bag and talking about them. We also practiced some dialogues about how when it’s hot out, going to the pool is a fun way to stay cool. Our last activity was making flashcards – I had a set of pool-related pictures and based on our dialogues, the learners already knew some of the vocabulary, so they could fill them in. For the others, we wrote the vocabulary under the pictures. At the end of class, I pointed to pictures on a blank set, and the learners had to repeat the vocabulary words. Everyone was laughing and having fun throughout the class, and I had a blast as well!

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We talked a lot about the difference between day, evening, and night shift, and the general structure of a shift in the United States (two fifteen minute breaks and a lunch break). We did a round robin with flashcards that Keli made that listed an occupation as well a shift, practicing how to ask about someone’s job and their shift and how to respond. We also did a round robin where we asked each other what our first jobs were and how old we were when we started working. Keli made a sample staff calendar, and the learners did a document search where they’d have to find the shift that an employee was working on a particular day. Halfway through the class, Keli also had the learners stand up and act out commands using TPR, which I thought was a great way to bring up the energy in class. Keli kept everyone engaged and laughing throughout the class.
