    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I had planned a lesson for the Thursday module that covered hand washing. I had decided that the lesson was important enough given the current Coronavirus outbreak that I wanted to do it for each of my class locations, so I also did it at Rigler and Rockwood on Wednesday. It turned out that this morning one of my higher level learners from Rockwood came to the class at Beach (which she doesn’t typically do). I didn’t think repeating this information would be as useful to her as it might be to others so I switched gears at the last minute. I had prepared a lesson for the Tuesday class but noone came on Tuesday, so I decided to use that lesson plan instead. We talked about the states that voted on Tuesday and did a listen and point of those states on the map. We then talked about each candidate that was being voted for on Tuesday, and dictated their names, ages, where they were from and something about them. We then went around asking each other questions about the candidates.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I came to the Spanish book group at 9am to read chapter 3 of Ramona the Pest with the existing book group. At 10:00, we switched to English. We did the alphabet sheet, yelled and spelled our names. I then handed out two pages from the English version of Ramona the Pest with drawings from the book. We talked about what was happening in the images and wrote questions and answers “What is Davy wearing?” “He is wearing a cape.” and then round robined each set of Q&A. After class, all the learners expressed that they really enjoyed class and enjoyed continuing talking about the chapter we had just read but in English. I am excited to continue this practice. Patrik showed up at one point with some Census swag, which folks were excited to take home. Everyone seemed familiar with the Census. I will try and make sure we take time to talk about it one of the Mondays this month.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Super bummed about today. I have two regular learners. I knew one would be gone for a doctors appointment. I have typically been arriving for this class more than 30 minutes early to hold up a sign and try to advertise to new parents about the class and invite them in person to join. This morning I had some issues with one of my kids and was a little delayed in getting to school (I am also to the point that I feel like everyone has seen my sign and heard from me, and that getting there super early has diminishing returns). I showed up exactly 15 minutes before class with no sign of my regular learner. After about 10 minutes, a teacher popped her head in and said the learner had asked her if English class was cancelled today and the teacher of course said she didn’t know. So the learner left. I feel terrible about that. I ended up hanging out for the rest of the class time in case anyone popped in but to no avail. I will remedy this on Thursday by giving both learners my cell number so they can check in with me directly (and also tell them that we will NOT cancel class).

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): One of the regulars was sick, so it was one regular and one learner who regularly comes to other locations. We looked through a book called “Where Children Sleep” and dictated some information about the child. There is a large photo of each child’s room, so we then took turns identifying things in the kids’ room – soccer ball, baby doll, fan, cabbage etc. We then took turns asking each other about each kid. I also felt very honored by the chance to rock one of the learner’s baby to sleep. He is getting to know me and it is lovely.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I made a worksheet with icons from the iphone weather app, would then name an icon “thunderstorm” and have the learners find it and then write down the word. Then we wrote out some conversations “The forecast says its going to snow!” “I hope school is cancelled!” and practiced having those conversations. A good class overall.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I thought that I was coming early to attend the Spanish Book club and was going to read a chapter of Ramona the Pest in Spanish with some of the learners (and with some potential new learners). When I got to school at 9, most of the people from that group had a different meeting scheduled, and were going to start book group at 10. I waited around for the learner who comes from Beaverton, and meanwhile one more learner showed up for English class. Since I had assumed I would be working with the group who had just read Ramona, I had printed out a few pages from the English version of the book, using the chapter they would be reading. We first did some listen and point on the pages. Then we spent time describing what we saw in the pictures from the book pages I printed. “The boy is crossing the street at the crosswalk.” The boy is stopping the cars so the children can cross the street” etc.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a listen and point with a sheet I made about where stuff is on a page “It’s next to the star” etc. This gave us lots of time to practice pronunciation – especially with “It’s”. Then we watched a video of the book Knuffle Bunny, which involves a dad and kid walking through town to get to the laundromat. We dictated the directions to the laundromat and then asked each other how they got there: “They ran down the block, and through the park. They zoomed past the school and into the laundromat”. We then had a good discussion about how we do laundry at home. We also talked about our kids and their favorite stuffed animals/toys (which is featured in the story). Overall this lesson worked really well in that we had practice writing (something this learner is lower level at) plus nice conversations (which the learner is quite good at).

We dictated what a hate crime was, the number we can call for help, etc. We did a listen and point of the LCS brochure. The learner’s baby was very fussy and in need of a nap in the last 20 minutes, so we played and sang “Twinkle twinkle” and the learner wrote down the lyrics to sing along. Was a nice way to end the class.

At first we had only one learner, and the second one showed up after about 30 minutes. First we round-robined “Do you know the Bill of Rights?” “Yes I do/No I don’t”. Then we watched a video about the Bill of Rights, then we dictated the first 8 amendments. After dictations, we worked in pairs (one learner one leader) asking “What’s the 3rd amendment” etc. This worked really well.

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After Cafe espanol, I invited everyone over to the English class. We had three learners and ended up with a 1 hour class. We round robined “Do you like to clean your house?” “Yes I do, no I don’t”, listen and pointed a Natural Cleaning recipes sheet. Then we round robined with some of the items from the recipes “This is white vinegar/baking soda, castile soap, etc”. Finally we did some say/do with cleaning activities (sweep the floor, vacuum the carpet, dust the furniture, fold the laundry). A fun class with lots of laughter – I am hoping that these folks come back on Wednesday and that a few more join in!

    What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The three learners who came today all know each other. Two had lower English skills and one was quite high. It felt like maybe he thinks he is too high level for the class, so if he comes back I will work hard to engage and challenge him more. I think it would also help if we had a couple more learners to collaborate with. We talked about how we got to class, and then using pictures of other transportation modes (MAX, bus, bike, plane, etc) did some round robins about getting to class – How did you get to class today? I flew my plane. Oh! You flew your plane! etc etc. We then took a look at the Trimet system map, but it was not very successful, and I need to bring different maps in the future. One of the learners could not read the map at all because her eyesight was not good enough (and she either doesn’t have or didn’t bring glasses). Next time we will use a simpler map of the closer neighborhood. Finally, we had one learner give us directions to walk from her house to the school (When you leave my house, take a right. At the corner, take a left. Walk straight until you get to school).

As parents were leaving from dropping their kids off, I stood at the door and held a sign saying “English Class” with the days and times. I had three conversations with different parents who sounded interested in joining, but no one could stay that day. After about 30 min, Patrik and I met with the PTA liaison Nate and the SUN coordinator Monique. We made copies of flyers advertising English class and Monique and I hung them up all around the school.
